Hendry was bound to make a bad move sooner or later this year. I don't see how Restovich is going to add anything to the team.

Right handed power that can play first and the OF.

Who would you have brought up? Sing, who is still having troubles getting acclimated to AAA?

Somebody that had potential to be good someday. BTW how many games has Restovich played at 1b in his career?

Zero:

Total as LF 34

Total as RF 49

It was also mentioned on the Score that he had played "some 1B" in spring training.

That hardly makes me feel better. Moving from 1B to RF is one thing. Moving from RF to 1B is something else.

Not sure he was called up to play 1st. I think Mabry will take that spot and Restovich will be called up to replace Mabry as an outfielder and come off the bench. Maybe?

Again, who would you have promoted?

How is this a "bad move" by Hendry given the situation?

It's not a bad move given the situation. It's probably the best one he could make. I would have liked to see Sing get an opportunity, but Restovich has major league experience. This is a catastrophe for the Cubs, obviously Hendry is scrambling. There's not much else he can do.

Hendry had 5 options as far as what to do with the roster:

Call up Sing

Call up Hoffpauir

Call up Restovich

Find someone off the scrap heap

Trade for someone

Sing has struggled in AAA. Hoffpaiur is in AA because he didn't hit in AAA. The scrap heap is the scrap heap for a reason, and it's too early to make a deal without getting absolutely robbed by an opportunistic GM who know's we're desperate. To top it all off, Dopirak broke his foot like 1 game into the season.

Restovich makes the most sense. If we were to roster someone, it had to be someone who'd have usefulness after Lee and Dopirak come back. Were we to call up Sing or Hoffpauir, we'd be stuck with a guy who had really limited use after the 2 already rostered 1B's came back. Restovich cam be a useful 4th OF, RH power bat off the bench, and spell whoever is at 1B. By all rights he probably should have been on the team anyway in place of Bynum.

It was the best move under the circumstance.

Who's getting derostered to make room for Restovich?

Lee to the 60 day DL would solve that problem. I've seen 6-8 weeks. With a rehab assignment that comes to 60 days.

I'd be suprised if the 60 day DL'd him. Fractures can heal faster than projections. I broke my wrist once and instead of the 6-8 weeks, it took about 4 to heal.

First, did you have the same wrist injury as Lee did? Second, did you factor in the recovery time? They aren't going to take the cast off on one day and stick him in the lineup. I have seen 8-10 weeks on the injury. Putting him on the 60 day DL would ensure that he wouldn't come back too quick.

I agree with your assessment. Hendry basically had his pick of poor decisions to make. He made the least worse decision he could.

No and yes. You can help a break or a fracture heal more quickly, to a certain extent. Drink lots of milk, stimulate blood flow to the area, etc.

I think Lee will miss closer to the 8 weeks than the 10.

8 weeks is 56 days. But I understand your point. I hope you are right.

It's not a terrible decision given the options. You don't call up a strict 1B in this situation unless you expedct him to start everyday. In this case, there's little doubt that Mabry and/or Walker are getting most of the 1B starts over anyone we have in the minors, so calling up someone mainly limited to 1B makes it tough to find at bats for them.

Restovich, who COULD play a little 1B (I know he played there in at least 2 spring training games) and corner outfield is at least a warm body who provides an option or two.

Can we take off the question mark from the post and just make it "Restovich called up" since he did get called up and its not speculation anymore.

what was the corresponding 40-man move?

I think Scott Moore should be going to the local SportMart and picking up a firstbasemans glove...Maybe an outfielders glove also...he might be my choice to play firstbase in another month

But is that one day worth potentially losing someone to another team off of the 40 man roster?

We have riff raff like Bynum on the 40 man, so we can afford to do so.

I believe that Restovitch played quite a bit of first in Pittsburgs system.

He said, on the Mike North Morning Show, that other than Spring Training, he had not played first base.

Then Chris Spier had better get started teaching him because Mabry playing there every day is not good. TWalk is just slightly better.

Actually just suck it up and find a way to win now.

Ya know, basic 1st baseman skills aren't rocket science. You can practice all day digging balls out, but so much of what makes a good 1st baseman is instincts.

I don't know about that....Einstein was a heck of a first baseman back in his college days.
