looks like cancelling my ExtraInnings package was a good move this year

So your allegiance to a team is based on whether or not they're going to be good? Personally, I love MLB EI for more reasons than just the Cubs.

when not ignoring my caveats and living in fantasies, ie. Jason Lane is better than Matt Murton or that Brad Lidge was a better closer than Dempster last year, it isn't even debatable.

Lidge's ERA+ was 181 last year; Dempster's was 136. Not exactly a fantasy when you, uh, you statistics. As for Murton versus Lane, we don't have much to base a comparison on, but my guess is that Lane will have better numbers this year.

Pierre > Tavarez

OK

Walker >/= Biggio

OK

Lee > Berkman

I'd disagree with this and actually say that they're equal or Berkman's slightly ahead. His OPS+ has been better than Lee every year except last year, meaning that I'd need to see another year like that from Lee to say he's better than Berkman. Also, Berkman's career OBP is 50 points higher than Lee, and I love OBP.

Aram >/= Ensberg

OK

Murton > Lane

As stated above, I disagree, but we'll have to see how it plays out.

Jones >> Burke

I'd only go with one greater than symbol, since Burke was a rookie last year and can be reasonably expected to improve, while Jones is what he is.

Barrett >>> Ausmus

Again, I'd go with one fewer greater than symbol, because Ausmus is better defensively and I think calls a better game than Barrett... but yes, Barrett does add significantly more than Ausmus.

Cedeno >> Everett

Disagree again. Yeah, it looks like Cedeno will be a better hitter than Everett, but do we really know yet, based on the small sample size? Not to mention that Cedeno has looked shaky in the field, while Everett may be the best defensive SS in the national league. I'd call them equal or give Cedeno a slight edge.

I will give you that the Cubs big 3 of Prior, Z, Wood, if healthy and producing like they are capable of probably would not equal what Pettittie, Clemens and Oswalt did last year, but they wouldn't be excessively worse (all are perfectly capable of being below or near 3.00 ERAs).

Yeah, but here's the problem, and I'll say it again. They're not healthy. Given their histories, they probably won't be healthy through October if/when they come back. Not to mention that Prior and Wood haven't pitched like they did back in 2003, nor are they likely to this year. Do Wood and Prior have the potential to put up ERAs at or below 3.00? Sure. Will they? History says it's very unlikely.

That includes Dempster's subpar time as a starter.

As a reliever last year:

Lidge: 3.12 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 12.45 K/9, .226 BAA, 3.00 K/BB

Dempster: 1.85 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 8.18 K/9, .218 BAA, 1.96 K/BB

Lidge was better, but it's not a landslide.

I almost cancelled my Extra Innings package but I didn't. To that I added satellite radio, so I could listen to games even when I couldn't watch. No regrets.

I still love baseball as a game, so I will always watch baseball. I'll still wear my Cubs hat and stuff when I go to local college or semi pro games.

NoI am not ashamed of being a Cubs fan. I have a great deal of respect for the personal qualities of many of the players, especially Maddux.

I just..... Well I'll tell you what it is; I still remember 2003. I just haven't gotten over that. I just so much want the Cubbies to win I can't stand it.

Say what about that other first baseman called Lee, the one that plays for Tampa? Ah well, I can dream can't I?

Sorry for the rant folks.

fine. the point is, don't shift the argument and then tell me I am wrong. by your own admissions about the rest of the two teams, it's pretty clear the 2006 Cubs, if health and producing like they are capable of, are far better than the 2005 Astros.

and since we are talking about closing, perhaps the most important statistic of all

losses by team in games where the pitcher came in in a save situation

Dempster: 0

Lidge: more than 0

The debate arguing if the '06 Cubs are good enough to win 35 of 45 like the '05 Astros is unnecessary because the '06 Cubs don't have a huge deficit to overcome (as of now).

The '06 Cubs may be slightly worse than the '05 Astros, but until we fall ~12 games under .500, this discussion is moot.

Well I'd quite like to win 35 out of 45 no matter what our record is.

STILL WAITING FOR STICKY

I hope you don't get it. Silly to jinx while the team is actually still doing well in spite of the injuries (knocking wood).

As he said when he started the thread, not having an injury thread didn't do any good. So why not have one.

An argument I was making before DLee went down.

I remember you making a case at some point before the DLee injury. I think I made a point immediately after while the game was still going on and many people wanted to kill me.
