On board...

Rusch has only really had two good pitching years in the last 10. It always amazes me how long some lefthanders can stay in the league with subpar stuff. I'd much rather have a better righthander pitcher out there. In this case, Rusch hasn't set the bar too high.

Rusch has a 5.05 ERA as a starter between 2003 and 2005 and a BAA near .300. If he gets bumped, though, the pitching staff likely goes up to 12 and we lose a bench player. He'd be going to the bullpen

It would also be beneficial for the Cubs to see Guzman vs. big league hitting for a month or a little less before Wade Miller is set to be activated. They need to figure out what to do with Wade and Guzman should be a large part of that decision.

Guzman deserves a shot, but not Hill--at least not now. He was overmatched with a capital O last year and in the spring.

he wasn't overmatched in the spring. he had some bad outings, but he was also dominant at times. and i think some struggles are to be expected when you jump from AA to the bigs in like four months.

I'm aboard. My exact words to a Cards fan friend at school today:

Well, Rusch is pitching, so we're gonna lose, it was nice being in first place though.

I dont think I can stand another Glendon Rusch start. He was fine in 2004, but the 1-12 brewers rusch version has returned. Guzman plz.

He just signed a 2 year 5 million dollar contract. Even bringing Gooz or Hill up guarantees a 12 man Pitching staff for ever. You can't just DFA him, won't you have to eat his contract?

Hm... Trade? What teams would want Rusch...

and what can we get? With the rotation getting healthy, great infield, Jacque waking up... Theres not many holes. I think trade for some good prospects would be good enough. Or should we take a chance with him in the bullpen? Whats his bullpen ERA?

Hill before Guzman. Hill has already dominated AAA(and is picking up where he left off so far this year), already has service time, and it allows Guzman to build arm strength.

Regardless of who gets the nod, DFA Rusch.

Hill pitched well in AAA, but he pitched like crap with the big league club last year. I'd rather see Guzman called up. But I'd definitely take either over Rusch.

I bet we could actually get something pretty good from the Rangers if they took Koronka.

hate to break it to you, but there's a decent chance that guzman will pitch like crap when he first comes up too. marshall didn't pitch that well in his first start. you just can't expect a guy to hop right into the rotation and put up a 2.50 era.

I'm not sure what I said that could have possibly caused you to infer that I'm expecting Guzman to put up a 2.50 ERA, but anyways... he's been in the minors since 2000 and I'm ready to see what he can do at the major league level.

According to Hendry - "why can't we have a zach duke?"

i am too. but you don't want hill b/c of the lumps he took last year, and i think it'd be naive to think that guzman won't have similar problems at first.

I think it's pretty ridiculous to just assume that Guzman will struggle. Sure, he might. But then again, he might not. And it's not that I'm opposed to calling Hill up; I'd just rather see what Guzman is capable of first.
