My hate of the Deadbirds pre-dates my being a fan of the Cubs. When I was 7 years old I was a huge Brewers fan (lived in Racine) and the Crew made it to the WS where they got beat by the Smith/McGee lead, blue uniform wearing, astro-turf playing Cardinals. I have hated them ever since.

Since I was little the only sports teams I hated were the Packers and Mich St Mens Basketball team... It  was Matt Morris talking S+++ in 03' about how he was rooting for any team playing the Cubs in the playoffs, and that they made to the postseason b/c of an easy schedule in Sept(which was true). That bumped me from utter dislike to total hatred. Also, cause Chris Carpenter goes from injury prone to Walter Johnson the minute his jersey changed red.

1892 -- The American Association folded at the conclusion of 1891 and the St. Louis Browns rejoined the National League as part of the newly reformed 12-team circuit. The Browns played in Sportsman's Park at Grand and Dodier. The St. Louis franchise has had continuous membership in the National League ever since.

I don't think I really started hating them until I joined NSBB. I always thought of them as the Cubs rivals, but my hatred for them didn't start until I became more internet savvy.

I grew up hating the mets but thinking of the cards as just rivals. Then my roommate in college was a cards fan, and he hated the cubs, and that's when I realized it was a lot more hostile than I thought.

I've hated the Cards since the Cardinals-Twins world series in 87. I found myself getting behind Puckett, Hrbeck and Gaetti during that series, and really hating guys like Ozzie, Tony Pena, Willie Mcgee, Terry Pendleton, Jose Oquendo and Vince Coleman. I think it was because we watch a lot of it at a family friends house, and they were Cardinal fans and enjoying rubbing our faces in the fact that they were in the Series.

(Holy crap...just looked up the 87 series stats for fun...I didn't realize that Don Baylor was on that Twins team...crazy.)

1998 - I got into baseball, I just thought of the Cardinals as rivals, but the chase got me into it

I started hating the Cardinals after being around Cardinals and White Sox fans in 2004

I grew up in the west Chicago suburbs, surrounded by abusive White Sox fans. So that was the team I hated. It wasn't until I moved to Springfield, IL and was surrounded by abusive Cards fans that I started hating them.

My question is: Why do people hate the Cubs so much??

I've never hated the Cards so much as I have the Astros. I appreciate the intensity of the Cubs/Cards rivalry, but some of their (Card's) fans are a bit overbearing.

The Cardinals I can understand as it is a rivalry. The White Sox fans are not real fans. They're just anti-Cub. They think the Cubs are their enemy. They root for AL teams over the Cubs. "Cubs Suck" is their entire baseball vocabulary. If the Sox played the Cardinals in a World Series, I'd root for the Cardinals

best moment in cardinal hating for me was when zambrano struck out edmonds and pumped his arm wildly.

No offense, but that was one out. What about the 4 game domination in Chicago in '03 that sent you to the playoffs? What about the Neifi grand slam last year?

I'd root for a bomb scare.

Not sure when my hatred for the Cardinals reached the level it is at now. Part of it is they've got guys who are so easy to hate: Edmonds, Carpenter, LaRussa, etc. I'm of the opinion that Edmonds needs to get knocked on his can at least once a game.

The team I've absolutely hated as long as I can remember is the Mets. I wish they were still in our division. Cubs had some absolute wars with them over the years. Especially in the mid-to-late 80s.

When I was 10, I believe. I know I went to a Cubs/Cards game at Wrigley with my parents and some Cards fan told me that I was a little s*!$ for liking the Cubs so much and to switch sides because the Cubs will never win a series.

Coincidently that was also when my parents started to hate the Cards. My hatred for the Sox and Mets started when I was born. My grandpa cursed the Mets till the day he died.

My first live Cubs game was in 1992 (I was 10) at Wrigley against the Cardinals. We had killer seats one row behind the Cardinals dugout. I remember all game trying to get a ball from one of the players, and the entire section would yell to the players on their way into the dugout to "give the kid a ball!" but they always ignored me and their requests... until the 8th inning. Finally Ozzie Smith addressed us, looked right at me wearing my Cubs hat, and tossed a ball to a middle aged guy a few people next to me wearing a Cards hat and jersey.

Real classy. From that moment on I hated everything Cardinal.

I don't know. But I do remember getting a chuckle the day I heard about Vince Coleman being run over by the tarp roller at Busch. Speediest guy on the team can't outrun the tarp machine on a slow setting? Somehow that struck me as ironic.

In my defense, I was maybe ten at the time.

I can remember moments when I've hated the Cardinals, though. One of the biggest ones was when Billy Mueller tripped over that tarp to catch a foul ball in '02. (God, was that an awful year as a whole!) Not only did he not catch the ball, but he was out for a while, it helped kill the Cubs momentum for the season, and he was never quite the same as a Cub after that.

Thanks to Littlefield, however, the Cubs found a replacement Best 3B since Ron Santo. :-)

Agreed. That 5 game series in 03' is my favorite regular season series ever. This series we just had was pretty sweet, but too early to have enough meaning.

That series was before I hated the Cardinals, but the best game was the 6-0 comeback. I still remember the headline the day after: "Angry Alou Unleashes"

I was going loco. Now if we do that in the playoffs, that will be my all-time favorite Cardinals hating moment

5 games, but who's counting?

The Mets have always been my least favorite team.

Didn't you only win 4 of them though?

Yep, they went 4-1. The series that killed the Cards wasn't that one, they had the lead after that but was swept by Colorado, IIRC.

But, that series against the Cubs deflated them pretty badly.
