1999: I fully convert from being an Atlanta Braves fan (from my S. Carolina roots) to being a Cubs fan.

1999-2002: We suck. The Cards don't. Although they don't do a lot.

2003: Mark Prior hates on the Cardinals after he beats them in a start. Steve Kline responds by publicly hoping he is killed by a line drive off his head. I am pissed.

2004-2005: Cardinals import any and all manner of average to bad players and watch them all have the years of their lives while running away with the division two years in a row. I get bitter.

2005-06 offseason: I join NSBB and meet some classy Cardinals fans, but also hear new stories that give me even more reasons to hate STL.

That's pretty much the story.

I don't ever remember not hating the Cardinals.

looking back, I remember going to a Cubs-Cards game when I was seven, and I know I absolutely hated the team in the other dugout.

my mom brought me to six games that year. I don't remember having that same feeling about the Bucs or Phils, but I knew I hated the Cardinals.

I started hating the Cardinals after being around Cardinals and White Sox fans in 2004

They acted that way b/c of the passion of Cub fans & the popularity they have outweighed anything they have ever seen before.

Well, like I said above, it was a FULL conversion. :D The Braves are just another team now.

I began really hating the Cardinals when I got to Mizzou. Just as a whole the most arrogant bunch of fans I've ever met. What they have to be arrogant about, I don't know, I mean it's not like they've won a championship or SIX (bulls). Then, last year, the Cardinals won a game in April, and some moron Cardinal fan said, "let's just cancel the season now and give the Cardinals the World Series. Also, my [expletive] roommate last year, when the Cubs lost a heart breaker to the Reds during their final week collapse in 2004, he came in and just started laughing at me. That was REALLY classy. A good amount of them are pansies if ya ask me.

There are fans like that for every team.

Cubs, Cards, Red Sox, Devil Rays...

This past weekend I had 4 Cub fans tell me I was gay because I had a Cards hat on. CLASSY!

I know that they were just %#$%*^s and would be that way no matter what team they root for.

I know that some people will poke fun at this, but we tend to use the word "hate" too much. I don't hate the cubs. It really gets under my skin when the Cards lose to them, but I reserve my hate for other things in life.

Like republicans.

Why hate so much? I agree, MET, that this is all a bit silly. We sound like Sox fans here. In fact, I think all of the newer fans that the Cubs have the last few years (since the Sammy era) bring most of the hate. Real fans don't have to hate on other teams. Just enjoy the Cubs, fellas!

I do love beating the Cardinals, though!

You guys are gonna hate me :)

I don't hate the Cards. Being a native Arkansan, I've been around Cardinal stuff all my life. My grandmother used to listen to the cards on KMOX, so even as a little cub fan, I paid attention to the cards for my grandmother's sake.

Truth be known, I enjoy watching the cards play baseball. I don't necessarily "root" for them, but when I get a chance to see them on TV, I watch -- they play good ball.

I have a lot of good friends who are cardinal fans. In fact, I'm heading to SL this June with a car full of Cardinal fans.

I've been to quite a few games in SL, and I've only had a bad fan experience once --- and that fan was drunk. For the most part, the cardinal fans were just fine.

I'm kind of in the same boat here. Each team has classless, sucky fans. And I agree that hate might be a bit too strong a word. I don't hate the Cards. I don't really hate any team (except Duke basketball; that runs deeper, somehow, even though I'm a bigger Cubs fan than I am a Tar Heel fan). Although I do think Jim Edmonds is a very lame individual, he's really the only Cardinal who I feel that way about that I can think of.

All this is not to say that I don't TOTALLY get into the rivalry. I LOVED the sweep, and I enjoy wins over the Cards more than wins over other teams, and I generally always root against the Cards, but that's as much because we're in the same division as anything.

Oh. And I'm with you on Republicans.

My ex-boss is one of the biggest Cub fans you'd ever want to meet. He's also one of the biggest jerks you'd ever want to meet...and he was a cocky SOB during baseball season.

Every team has fans like that...well...maybe not like THAT...but damn close.

Hey guys, don't mistake fans with the team. They are not the same thing at all. Sure, I can't stand their arrogant fans - but I dislike ALL arrogant fans. I mean, it's not like the fan actually did anything, except choose to cheer for a given team. They've got nothing to be arrogant about.

Also, the brand of hate I brandish for the Cardinals is as much jealousy as anything.

They seem to almost always have, or get, what I want the Cubbies to have.

I respect the heck out of the Cardinal organization because they're able to consistently put a quality product out on the field (except for most of the 1970's).

All that being said, I hate the Cardinals with every ounce of my Cub-fan energy. :P

Still respect them though. :)

Hey Gus!

I haven't said hi to you yet this season.

Bummer about SIU in the NCAAs. They rolled over. It was nice to see Withita and Bradley make some noise.

We have to hook up for a bear at SIU day this year.

I do feel this strong disliking for a good amount of Cardinal fans I've met down here in Columbia. Just this arrogance they have, I don't get it. And I've been taunted by many Cardinal fans for booing players on the Cubs, because, according to them, that makes me a bad fan. Give me a break.

Hey MET,

I actually went to Auburn Hills to watch the beat-down at the hands of WVA. That Pittsnogle dude is a real 'Hoosier' (Saint Louis folks understand what I mean by this term), but a pretty good player. I think the Dawgs shot their wad in the MVC tourney, and really did not have anything left in the tank for the ncaa's. I guess that's what happens when you only have nine active players on your roster. Their depth will be much improved next season.

My first Cub game is not until May 18...., but I may show up on SIU day too.

There is a 'friendraiser' at the Cubbybear North in Lincolnshire next month where alums can meet/mingle with Coach Lowery & several SIU basketball players - $50, includes food and drink. I think I'm going to head out into the boonies that are the northern 'burbs for that. PM me if you want/need more info.

I love my baby daughter, I love cheeseburgers. clearly I am not talking about the same emotion.

similarly, I hate the guy who murdered my aunt, and I hate the Cardinals. again, not talking about the same emotion. our language can be fairly imprecise, so sometimes you go with the word that's convenient.

I personally don't think that we sound like Sox fans when saying "I hate the Cardinals" because Sox fans typically aren't passionate enough about baseball to say that all too often. when I start saying "Sox suck" when clearly they do not, then come talk to me about sounding like a Sox fan.

Oh my God. Did I just quote the Carpenters?

It's different. White Sox fans hate the Cubs more than anything. They think the Cubs are their enemy. They root for AL teams over the Cubs, yet bitch at the Cubs at the end of the regular season if they finish w/in the number of games the Cubs lost to that team. "Cubs Suck" is the entire baseball vocabulary of White Sox fans. Rooting for the Sox to win isn't even # 1 on their agenda. The # 1 thing on their agenda is rooting against the Cubs.
