Speaking of fast, I couldn't believe how quickly Aramis got around on that bomb he hit. Now that was fast.

Aramis? What about Mabry? (note: I think he's finally rounding 2nd)

Actually, I was referring to bat speed.

No one was faster than Todd Coffey today, and the Reds did win, so........

And what did Freel's speed do to us today? ...besides exposing Barrett's defensive deficiencies...

it led to one run. the home runs accounted for four. your point is...?

speed is 1/4 important as power??? :D

that's the funny thing. for all the havoc he caused on the basepaths today -- way more than one guy will usually cause on a given day -- all it amounted to was ONE run. meanwhile six other guys simply put one good swing on a ball and accounted for TEN.

So are we saying HR is the most important thing again? Cause last I remember last year we were 1st or 2nd in home runs (NL) and 10th(??) in runs scored.

You are going to see days where HR win games. But that shouldn't make you "scoff at" our new and improved speed. Because it IS important and CAN help win games.

No. Getting on base is the most important thing.

What "we" are saying is that hitting homeruns >>>>>>>>>>>>>> causing havoc on the bases.

Did the thread creator of the other thread ever say "causing havok" was MORE important than home runs or OBP? Because it seems you guys are taking shots at that thread. And I don't remember him saying speed was more important than everything else. Only that it helps (as proven by that one run by freel today).. There are going to be games where 1 run wins you the game.

I will still subscribe to good pitching will beat any sort of OBP you put up there. Remember, a good OBP is NOT getting on base the majority of the time. What is that attributed to? Good Pitching. We haven't seen good pitching yet this season.

10 of the 14 runs scored on homers today.

Are you saying the Cubs need more power? Please, I think you'll find that at the end of the year, they will have plenty of offense. It's pitching they need. Neither the Cubs or Reds displayed much of it in either game.

It seems like all of your arguements are black and white.

The Reds won by 2 runs today. The Freel run really didn't mean anything, other than the fact the Cubs were going to need at least 2 runs to tie.

of course because good pitching prevents the other team from having good obp. Why is so difficult for some people to grasp that pitching and defense and offense are exactly as important?

I never said that. I just don't like why this thread was started. Let's not mock other posters ideas. Speed, HR, OBP, and PICTHING is all important. And this team has all but the latter now. And we desperately need it, soon.

He has a point. Let's not get into mocking others posts. It will only lead to more animosity here.

Well stated. Thank you.

Absolutely. At Cincy, most games will be dominated by the HR. Not a big surprise today, although Freel's speed actually accounted for TWO runs today (1st and 8th). And yes, there will be days when the wind is blowing in at Wrigley where team speed will play a huge factor, much as it did in setting up the Cubs' big innings Monday. And there will be days when a starter dominates the entire game all on his own (I can't wait for that to start happening). It's all important, even on a play-by-play basis.

Actually, I saw it lead to two. And the Cubs hit 3 HRs and still lost. It's still a combination of things, all of which are important on a play-by-play basis.

Yeah, your right. Our Offense didn't let us down today. It scored ENOUGH runs to win. But PICTHING is what "probably" lost this for us. If we weren't eternally cursed with Wood/Prior. Prior would have been starting this game. Big difference between a healthy Prior and an anything Rusch. .
