Cedeno definitely could have looked him back a bit longer, but why was Barrett not in position to block the plate? Especially after making a bad throw to allow the runner to advance to 3b in the first place.

Because Lee's throw was well short of the plate.

What?!

Barrett played the short hop, and he was in front of the plate on the first base line.

you position yourself to block the plate, not for a hypothetical throw in the dirt.

I hate to say it but these past two games have been really sloppy. We look like last years club all over again.

6 runs is pretty good for the offense.

Yeah, that's what you're supposed to do, I'm just trying to give a reason why he moved away from the plate.

Cedeno did look over there, he just assumed that the look would be enough to stop Freel in his tracks. He assumed incorrectly. But, Cedeno did rifle the throw to 1st. The only way the Cubs get Freel there is if Barrett blocks the plate.

Sorry TT, that was a crappy job of holding the runner by Cedeno.

What more do you want him to do? The replay showed Freel wasn't more than a couple steps away from the base, and had to move back to get there. Ronny's throw was a bullet too.

He had all day. He barely peaked over there before unloading. That's what more I'd want.

Not worried about the Offense I'm worried about the sloppy defense play.

I just got the last inning. Did the bats look ok, or was it the same as last year? I know all the runs came off of 3 2-run homers.

Ideally you'd hold onto it for another second on a sharp hop like that, but if you look over and see him right near the bag, I can't fault him for turning and firing to first.

Last year's problem was the offense (as well as all the injuries to the pithing staff). And it probably will be this year's as well.

This game was lost by lousy pitching from Rusch and Williams. Without Wood, Prior and Miller, its going to be a long year.
