According to cubs.com Williamson left today's game because of a lower back strain, not an elbow injury as the radio broadcasters were apparently speculating.

Early exit: Cubs reliever Scott Williamson had to leave Sunday's game after three pitches because of a lower back strain. Baker said the right-hander was pulled as a precautionary measure and that Williamson's status was day to day.

That's encouraging news. Hopefully, he can recover over the next 8 days. It's much better than I was thinking.

That's good.

I find it funny when mentioned he was "day to day". . Isn't the basically how it always is? It's not like they are going to say, we expect him to be back in 5 days 8 hours and 2 seconds. . No need to even mention it. It's ALWAYS day to day. .

Cubs dodge another bullet, I suppose.

It must have been stopped by one of the bullets that already hit them.

God was chilling up in heaven thinking, "what's the use of shooting a dead horse again? My work is done for the season."

Rotoworld's take

Scott Williamson left Sunday's game in the fifth inning with a mild lower back strain. If the Cubs are calling it mild, there's gotta be at least a 50-50 chance he makes it back by Sept. 1. Consider him day-to-day.

The way Pat & Ron were talking about a possible elbow injury, I was expecting a Chad Fox type turn out. This is indeed good news. After 2 TJ surgeries, another one means bye-bye baseball career.

What a relief. When I heard he went down because of what looked to be an elbow injury first thing that came to mind was ..good thing Hendry signed two relief pitchers. Hopefully he can make it back before the season gets started.

Ryu or Weurtz should be able to fill in, if he's not ready in a week.

Even if Williamson's arm falls off Eyre's and Howry's contracts would still be lousy deals.

That's your opinion. If they pitch well, how could you call them bad deals? We have a starting staff that at times, take 100+ pitches to complete 5 innings. The bullpen is very important in today's game. It's my opinion that the money was worth the risk. Now we just have to hope they perform.

Personally, I think Eyre was a little overpriced, but I'm ok with it because we haven't had a good lefty non-specialist in awhile. Howry, however, I thought was a bit of a bargain if anything. He's been a pretty decent closer in the past and IMO is much better than guys that got much better contracts like Farnsworth and Looper.

When you give out humongous contracts somebody shouldn't have to get injured to justify the expenditure. I also just don't think these guys will pitch nearly well enough to earn their checks. I'd much rather have taken their money and put it towards a better RF than Jacque Jones, with whom we're tragically stuck for the next 3 years.

& if the Cubs don't take that risk & don't pay top dollar for Eyre & Howry there BP is the same as LY & that is terrible. Hendry did the right thing in this case.

No deal can be evaluated without considering opportunity cost, which in this case is 3 years of Jacque F. Jones at $5M per. Not only will Eyre and Howry have to pitch well enough to justify their huge paychecks, they will also have to pitch well enough to make me forget Jones is in right field for the next 3 years. Not likely.

If Jim hadn't gotten Howry and Eyre people would have complained all season how Hendry sucks cause he didnt try to upgrade the bulpen. He did what he had to do to sign the guys he felt would improve the pen. Injuries or no injuries I think it was the right thing to do, Im really excited about the bulpen going into the season, the first time Ive been able to say that in quite a while. I think it could wind up being one of the best bulpens in the NL. If we get our starters healthy we will deffinantly be the top team in terms of pitching. Im not crazy about JJ playing rightfield but Im not sure who else he could have brought in. Howry + Eyre = money well spent.

There is absolutely nothing, either in our recent history or in what has already happened this Spring, that would suggest our starting pitching will remain healthy this year.

I do agree substantial improvements have been made to our bullpen, and it's good to see.

The "big guns," though, are showing they will miss a significant number of starts once again. AGAIN.
