Bruce Levine says the Cubs have been talking to Oakland about Bynum as an additional backup middle infielder (someone more than Perez). Hmmm, this makes me think Walker might be traded soon.

Bynum is normally a second baseman but the A's have been playing him in the outfield; perhaps to show his versatility. He's also out of options...

Freddie Bynum, who is out of options, was playing right field, and he made a sensational catch in foul territory. He also stole a base as a pinch runner. ... Unless Bynum sneaks onto the Opening Night roster because either Thomas or Bobby Kielty (oblique strain) isn't ready to go, it is likely the A's will try to swing a deal for him rather than lose him on waivers.

Rotoworld seems to think that the Rockies are also interested in his services.

Freddie Bynum is out of options and the A's will likely try to trade him rather than lose him for nothing on waivers.

The Rockies are reportedly interested in Bynum as a utility man, although once the cuts start coming late in spring training guys like Bynum aren't exactly hot commodities.

...there's no room for him on the A's unless Antonio Perez or Marco Scutaro gets traded. Considering that he's fast and he can play both the infield and the outfield, he could become a very good 25th man on a National League team.

If you lose Jose Macias, you might as well get a similar type of player.

Bynum has very good speed, not great defensively at any of several positions but listed as a utility player. Will probably hit in the .260s with an OBP in low 3s and strike out way too much for someone who lacks power and can get to 1B quicker than most.

In hitters' leagues over the last 3 years, he has 9 HRs compared to 338 strikeouts.

He's always been in Oakland's top 30, I think he's around 25th this year. I doubt it has been top 100 overall, but his speed and decent swing have kept him up there in the A's system.

On the grapevine

The Cubs are interested in Oakland A's utilityman Freddy Bynum, a Chone Figgins-type who can play second or third base as well as any outfield spot.

Bynum, 25, who carried a .386 average and five stolen bases into the weekend, is out of options and unlikely to make the A's final roster cut.

Seems stupid, it's not like we don't have every position covered with a mediocre (at least) backup.

I could understand it if Neifi were on the way out, but else it seems pointless. Watch it be for Wellemeyer and he'll win 20 games this season with a sub 3 ERA.

Is he any better than Theriot? I doubt it. And Theriot's already on the 40-man.

Do players get additional options if they are traded?

Nope. Acquiring anybody for our 40 man roster right now just makes no sense unless they're a big difference maker. The 40 man is already full and Miller and possibly Grissom need to fit on there somehow. That Pagan signing was really stupid.

The problem is he is a a Jose Macias type. And we all know how much Hendry loves the, Jack of all trades, master of none baseball player.

uh, it wasn't a signing. they purchased his contract from the mets. if they lose him, oh no - a few thousand dollars lost. big deal.

Bynum is sort of a poor man's Chone Figgins. No question the As have been showcasing him big-time, but they genuinely do like him as a player.

But they won't give up on him. He's gonna clog a spot on the 40 man for no damn reason.

No, the guy who will be clogging up a spot on the 40 man will be Marquis Grissom if he makes the team. If not, Angel Pagan won't be clogging up anything because he's more than earned a spot on the bench with his .367/.412/.700 line. While I more than realize that spring training is a horribly small sample size, what on earth else can he do to make the team?

Been good in the previous years?

Keeping Pagan or Grissom around because they can back up CF is a horrible waste. Hairston isn't great out there but he can pass for it to give Pierre 10 games off for the year.

I'd be surprised if Pierre misses more than 1 or 2 games, if any.

Here's the thing about that. We have to have backup Outfielders. People are going to need a day off here and there. And that being said, here is the competition at this point.

Restovich .244/.279/.439

Grissom .200/.256/.250

Mabry .344/.421/.563

Pagan .367/.412/.700

Now, if you're about to say that Adam Greenburg could have probably outplayed the lot of them, hey, we're on the same page, but he's already been sent to the minors.

Mabry obviously is the 4th outfielder at this point and, hey, he's earned it this spring. So of who we have left, has Pagan not earned the job? Not like Restovich or Grissom have any (deserving) mitigating factors to land them the job over Pagan.

Pagan isn't the greatest ever, and he may sink in the majors, but he's earned the chance this spring to be our 5th outfielder. His AA & AAA numbers, while nothing impressive, at least lead me ot believe he'll be acceptable. If he carries a .270 average with a .330 on base percentage, well, that's about what you should expect out of a reserve.
