I heard a clip from a game yesterday and I think he was playing right field. Any other info?

The last time I checked it wasn't too good. I think he was hitting in the low 200s. But ST numbers don't really mean the much.

Corey is hitting .250/.286/.365 with 1 home run and 8 strikeouts in 52 at bats. It makes me happy to hear this.

.250 would have been an improvement...

I hope he does well. The better our "castoffs" perform after we trade them off, the more likely we are to get something useful in return in the future. However, if our castoffs routinely do well after we get rid of them, then that should be considered like a screaming indictment of our coaching at the major league level.

Conversely, if Patterson continues to play poorly for another team, we will have to admit that he, and not the ML coaches, is responsible for his failure (or success). One thing is for sure, he certainly isn't making the Cubs coaches look bad in Spring Training. The Baltimore Sun reports that Markakis (and Matos) are outplaying him which is one reason why he was moved to a corner OF spot.

There's certainly a possibility that he won't be a starter during the regular season.

If CPatt does well elsewhere, it only proves he finally got it through his thick skull he needs to change. Sounds like he hasn't, however. I know it's only Spring Training, but that's a disturbing report from the Baltimore Sun.

Here's an extract from today's Baltimore Sun

WHO'S HOT

Corey Patterson // Still fighting for the starting center-field job, Patterson entered in the sixth as a pinch hitter and had two singles. In the eighth inning, he stole his team-leading sixth base of the spring. He had been 1-for-15 at the plate heading into the game.

WHO'S NOT

Luis Matos // Not a good day with the bat for Matos. Leading off the game, he grounded out to the pitcher - his most productive at-bat. He hit into double plays the next two times and then struck out in the eighth with two outs and Patterson in scoring position. Oh, and the guys he is competing with in center went a combined 6-for-6.

They are talking about the most recent game. Corey was 1-15 leading up to that...

Thanks for pointing that out. It's not like the original post said that explicitly or anything... LOL

He entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the 6th.

Glad to see CPatt can still hit single-A pitching.

[sarcasim]Now is the time to do the Walker for Matos deal.[/sarcasim]

Markakis' development has started some buzz in Baltimore about Corey (and Matos) being traded. I found this quote from, Roch Kubatko, a Sun baseball writer

A team official indicated earlier this week that a decision on Markakis could come down to the last few exhibition games, after the Orioles break camp. They have back-to-back meetings with the Nationals in Washington and Baltimore. But it sure seems like they're leaning toward keeping him, considering that I'm hearing how other teams have been told that Corey Patterson, Luis Matos and David Newhan are available in the right trade. Take your pic

This is also interesting as it relates to Corey's chances for playing time if he isn't traded:

Asked if Nick Markakis' 4-for-4 performance against the Washington Nationals yesterday enhanced his chances of being on the Opening Day roster, manager Sam Perlozzo said, "It certainly helps when you see somebody do that, and it could be anyone who's trying to make the club. I'm as anxious to have it sorted out as you."

Perlozzo raved about Markakis' knowledge of the strike zone, saying it was as good as anybody's in camp. And he loves how Markakis isn't afraid to fall behind in the count.

"He knows what he wants to do with two strikes," Perlozzo said.

Perlozzo indicated that, if Markakis makes the team, he'd be playing most of the time "until he shows us that he can't."

If left-hander Scott Kazmir starts for Tampa Bay in the opener, it sounds like Perlozzo will use Jeff Conine or Kevin Millar in left field. "That's what they're here for, to hit left-handed pitching," he said.

So, connecting these two themes, I'm guessing that Markakis would start in center...

Left field is the weakest of Markakis' three positions. He's strongest in right, but more than adequate in center, and getting better.

LOL, I could be wrong but it seemed like the timing of that post was suppose to dispute my claim that the Baltimore Sun reported he was struggling. I was just trying to put it in the context of one game...

A massive bust. And all because he decided he didn't need to be coached anymore. Good luck with the rest of your life, Corey.

That question will be answered by his play with Baltimore.

Looks like the verdict is in:

.255/.288/.364

It was Corey. Time to move on. He'll be lucky if he plays in 50 games this year.

I have my doubts that Patterson will ever be able to put it all together but I don't looking at his spring training numbers this so far this spring shows that much.

Yes, but you know it's not just his spring training numbers from this year that counts against him.
