Just sharing, that's all. This is a message board, right?

It is. Sharing the fact what wasn't what I took issue with. The commentary upon it was.

Seems like someone needs a vented helmet.

Did I mention I'm bored to tears at work?

I wish we had those when I played ball. I remember going to bat a few times with ice in my helmet...I remember I had to situate it towards the back of my helmet so it wouldn't drip into my eyes.

The design of the helmets is also supposed to help better distribute the force of getting beaned in the head. I remember Len and Bob talking about it when Jerry Hairston got plunked. Anything that makes getting hit in the head less traumatic is a good thing!

I think they look stupid and the "science" behind it is BS.

where is a link to the science behind it? i'd be interested.

That's what I was wondering. Like those NFL new helmets, they had something involved in it that was supposed to help the players have less concussions and all.

I also brought up that point on the Hairston (I think) thread where I wonder if that new helmet made a difference, in comparsion of the old-helmets where they tend to crack or something whenever there is a 90+ mph fastball screaming at the head.

It is possible to design materials that absorb impact, e.g. bullet proof vests (high K.E.), car bumpers (low speed, high mass and therefore relatively large K.E.). This application would be relatively low K.E. The helmet is obviously fairly solid, so we're probably dealing with some complex microstructure.

The Cubs' are all blue though. They should paint the vents red. You know, add a little pizzazz. Style. Fashion.

I agree with Meat, we'd look like a college team.

I like the matte finish on Japan's helmets. Maybe it's b/c I wish we had Ichiro in right instead of Jones, but whatever.

Me three, but hey if they like 'em and it helps them play better then so be it. Heck they could wear buckets on their heads with the eyes cut out for all I care, as long as they win.
