Miller was on Sports central tonight along with his agent? Miller mentioned he didn't want with an option year. A lot of teams offered him that and NRI but he wan't to come to the Cubs all along. He said he will be ready for the rotation for Mid May he seemed pretty sure of a spot in that rotation considering if everyone is healthy he might out out luck.

Prior

Zambrano

Wood

Maddux

Rusch/Williams/Hill/Guzman/

considering I think one of those last four will be dealt before ST I would assume come mid-may one of those four guys will have pitched well enough to ancore that spot down.

I'm operating under the assumption that Wood will miss April - roughly the amount of time Wade will.

So in April we'll have:

Prior

Z

Maddux

Williams

Rusch

Then once Wood and Wade get back it should be:

Prior

Z

Wood

Maddux

Williams/Rusch/Miller

I like the thought of having three guys who are all pretty decent competing for the 5th starter job. I'd bet on Williams getting it, then when one of the big three inevitably suffers a fluke injury, Miller can replace them adequately. To make a long story short, the pitching staff gives me hope.

Can someone please tell me how Prior is injury prone?

Thank you in advance.

Beat me to it. Regardless, the point needs to be beaten in the ground some more.

Key phrase in my post: "when one of the big three inevitably suffers a FLUKE injury"

Good signing. If things go well, we'll have some pitching to dump to pick up a bat at the deadline.

Yea, you phrased it properly. But many others in this thread have included Prior among the injury prone. Journalists have done it as well. It just isn't right.

I don't want to start another debate on Prior and Injury prone but regardless of how he got injured he has been injured. Thus he can be described as injury prone. The reason for the injury is the excuse in this case.

If we get a significant contribution from Kerry as a starter I'll consider it an early Christmas gift. He may be valuable in the pen though. Of Williams/Rusch/Miller at least one is likely to suck. Williams will probably be at least serviceable, but I'm not expecting anything spectacular. Prior is still questionable IMO. I can't imagine the pundits will look at our rotation and use the "Murderer's Throw" moniker again, at least not without laughing.

A 5th starter is only needed three times the first month of the season. If Wood and/or Miller are ready by mid-May, you're talking maybe four, five starts max to worry about. That's not reason enough to hang on to Jerome, if you can trade him and get something like Lugo now. For those four or five starts, you could easily use Hill, or Guzman, or Koronka, or even Wellemeyer if he's still here, all of whom are on the 40-man roster (and obviously, Wood and Miller would be on the DL, so you can put someone like Koronka say on the 25-man active with no problems).

Personally, I'd like to see Hill get those starts.

Williams is definitely not getting enough love around here. I think he's going to surprise a few people.

I think the Miller signing is fine. It's not much of a loss if he doesn't pan out. As many have said, if he does pan out, it opens up several trade possibilities mid-season.

Good to see Hendry is preparing for Wood and Prior to be out for a period of time with that signing of Wade Miller.

Link?

Sarcasm dude.

The people who are consistently negative on this Cubs message boards are either White Sox fans or Trolls.

Link?

See how it works?

Nice =D>

BTW, how did Miller fit on the 40 man roster?

If I'm not mistaken, the Cubs have had just 39 men on the roster since the Patterson trade.

Kess is correct, but Miller has not yet been added to the 40-man roster. His contract requires only that he be added to the 40-man roster sometime before opening day.

Which means that he could be placed on the 60-day DL when he's added to the roster.

So does that mean they can add another guy on the 60 man roster?

I didn't bother reading the whole thread but I like this signing.

Does anyone else think that if we end up with a log jam come June with a surprisedly healthy lot of Wood, Prior, Miller, Williams, Maddux, Zambrano, and Rusch that we will have some very very very good bargaining chips for a midseason offensive upgrade?

After all that is what Hendry has shown his best at, mid season deals.

Hill and Guzman could also conceivably be added to that list.

He sure does and I personally feel Wade Miller will not help out this team but the risk is low.

I do think it's ironic that a guy that might not even pitch one inning for the Cubs gets 1M and that's ok but some guy like Mabry gets 1M and that's a bad thing. I'm not a big Mabry fan but at least he'll be able to contribute while IMO the best you can hope for out of Miller is a Williamson like performance for a month or two tops. I'd just rather spend this money on some impact players and forget the "bargins" every stinking year.

Miller was hurt and signed with Boston and pitched how much? He gets hurt with the same injury or close it and is out for almost the whole year. I just don't see the value of this. Yeah, there's upside but a very slight chance of it while still spending 1M on a guy that is going to be on the DL. I hope I'm wrong but I'm sick of these kinds of deals and once again Hendry is clinging to an injury ridden player thus keeping his "We had injuries" theme to continue when they fail.

I think Miller's convinced that he'll be able to pitch effectively this season which is why he was willing to sign without a saftey net (an option). From what he and his agent said last night, on the radio, he has basically been assured of a spot in the rotation; so don't expect to see him out of the bullpen. Of note, he has already started throwing the ball 60 feet without pain. Perhaps, he is overestimating his ability to come back quickly from this surgery but it seems he's staking his current (and future) standing on doing well enough to get a longterm deal. Only time will tell.

BH05 I hope you're right because Mr. Hendry seems to have a lot of money tied up in injured pitchers.

I wonder if Wood is throwing the ball 60 feet without pain? If not I would have to assume he would be behind Miller in rehabbing his shoulder and that would be June at the earliest.
