Vance,

You da man. Terrific collection. You're not into jerseys though? They're so expensive once you get them framed, but so long as it's a player you admire, they are so worth it. I'm going to be in Central Florida during Spring Training, near Cape Kennedy (and thus, Veira, the home of the Nats). If the Nats do in fact sign Sammy and I bring a Cubs Majestic Sosa jersey with me to the ballpark, you think he'd sign it? Or get all pissed off? I don't know how fan friendly Sammy is, so I can't judge in advance, and I wouldn't want to make the guy angry toting around a Cubs jersey.

The reason I don't do jerseys so much is that I get a lot of my auots outside ballparks, etc...and it's just very hard to lug a jersey around like that without it getting messed up. Also, my wall space in my office has gotten very limited. In fact, I have a binder full of 8x10's I haven't framed and hung up yet because of that.

I would love to get some jerseys signed, but baseballs are so much better space wise.

Sammy was an easy autograph to get pre-1998, after that nearly impossible. I got a bunch of Sammy autos early in his career, but only one (on my 2004 team ball) since then.

I heard he wouldn't sign jerseys...but now that his career is in the dumpster, he may become more fan friendly again. Your best chance is to let a kid or a hot chick give it to him. Once in Houston, he only signed for kids and hotties.

DKWG,

Just to add on to Vance's comments, I was at the Orioles ST complex last February, and we were fortunate to get Sammy on a day where he signed (was about 1 week in to ST after players had reported). However, he only signed balls and only signed for kids. There were some interesting collectible pieces that people around me had brought that they were trying to get signed, but Sammy wanted no part of it. Also, in the swarm of about 50 kids that tried to get his sig. he only signed about 10 balls. Fortunately, my son was one of the ones he signed.

I'm not the slightest bit interested in autographs of any kind, but at Spring Training at HoHoKam, I took the kids for 3 games. The last game was a scheduled Sammy Sosa signing session and I wanted to reward the kids for being patient during my mini vacation. We waited for an hour after the game around the arena where Sammy was supposed to sign. A PR guy came out and announced that Sammy was not going to be able to sign that day afterall, and the crowd dispersed. As we pulled around in the parking lot to bail out, there was Sammy signing stuff for the small group that remained after the announcement.

i never saw sammy sign much during ST, but one day he sat on the grass and signed like 10 balls while he stretched and then threw them into the crowd.

i'll have to take a picture of my den and post it...the wife is going to regret giving me control over that room! i'll be getting reggie jackson, carew, seaver, and aparicio this weekend at the i-cubs fanfest.

I probably have around 50-75 autographs of current and former Cubs, people in the front office, and announcers. I was a celebrity bat kid in 2001 and got my first autographs then (Sosa and Wood + 9 others). It led to me writing to each of the players and asking for autographs. I would send a 3x5 card and a SASE. Surprisingly most players sent them back signed. I did learn to put the names of the players on the return envelope because I still have an autograph from the first year that I have no idea who it is.

I have no baseball sigs, but my brother and I do have a card with Sweetness's sig on it. He signed it "WP". we got it in Platteville Wi, during training camp and Payton was done for the day, headed out witha flu or something when he was walking off the field and simply walked up to a group of us kids (about 6 of us) who were watching him practice. He signed something for each one of us, shook our hands, and went to the locker room, ignoring the mob of reporters...he was a class act...

my mom met Ernie Banks, but didnt bother getting his signature.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr............

Just added to the collection tonight. I went to a Mississippi Braves fan fest and got autographed balls and photos of Jeff Francoer, Kelly McCann, and Blaine Boyer. I also got some cards signed by former Cubs and Braves Jeff Blauser.

But the best, after the silent auction I came away with a 1974 Braves Jersey signed by Hank Aaron!

Vance, where do you keep your collection? You're bound to have one kick ass rec-room / mini hall of fame.

I'd love to see pics of it.

When I get it cleaned up, I'll take some pics. It's actually a small bedroom I've turned into an office.

A lot of it isn't displayed yet, as I need more cases and picture frames.

The wife wasn't happy with the Aaron jersey purchase, so I had to negotiate. It will now be my birthday present from her (my birthday is in August...lol) and I will receive it and be able to display it then. LOL

lets see...

Well my dad is a pretty avid card collector so we get a lot of autographs. Some of the ones i can think of off the top of my head are

-Nolan Ryan (met in person)

-Fergie Jenkins (met in person)

-Mickey Mantle (bought over the web, but actual autograph, and only owners of the autograph)

-Ryne Sandberg(met in person)

I know he has more, but i cant think of them right now. Hope to get some more recent players autographs at somepoint, but not too many of them now as far as i know.

The jersey, without the autograph, is $300! I bet the charity is very happy with you :)

Oh, and I'd like to add that I wouldn't call my room a mini-HOF unless you're willing to include the likes of Antonio Alfonseca, Amaury Telemaco, and Darryl Hamilton in the HOF. :)
