Would the Bears have taken Pope if Arizona didn't grab him with the pick directly in front of theirs?

I'm a little bit peeved they didn't get a top TE in the draft. It's a bit odd that they are a top ranked defense and they spent most of the draft beefing up the defense.

I sure hope Bradley comes back 100%, and I also hope Desmond Clark is a lot better than he appeared to be last year.

I have a feeling that they wouldnt have. I wish they would have taken Mercedes and not worried about a TE in the 2 round ,but oh well.

The fact is, we took a ton of offensive talent last year, and we still have to wait for much of it to grow and improve.

Airese Currie, Mark Bradley, Cedric Benson, Kyle Orton....we also have Berrian and possibly Gage to work on as well.

A tight end would have been nice, but depth with our corners might have been a stronger need. Finally we have a legitimate return man as wel.

OT Mark LeVoir (Notre Dame)

RB P.J. Pope (Bowling Green)

OL Travis Leffew (Louisville)

DE Mike Mendenhall (Temple)

TE Tim Day (Oregon) :D

PK Josh Huston (Ohio State)

P Joel Stelly (Louisiana-Monroe)

OG Tyler McMeans (Miami, FL.)

TE Cooper Wallace (Auburn)

WR Dwayne Slay (Texas Tech) (Rumor)

He's slow (4.80) but he hits like a freaking truck. If you can speed him up and teach him some coverage skills, he may kill someone on the field.

I'm not sure why I typed WR but I fixed it.

Also

Holy crap that's a hell of a hit. My goodness. Always enjoyable to see that happen vs. KState.

I know I watched Huston a lot (since I watched a lot of Ohio State) but I don't remember much. I can only hope he's better than Gould. If they want to improve special teams, they should improve the part that actually scores points. Gould was awful.

I really like the Tim Day signing. He was supposed to be a third to fifth rounder.

He was a good option in Oregon's offense but was pretty inconsistent. Better receiver than blocker.

This is part of the problem with TEs. All of them are better at something and worse at the other. There are a very small number of all around TEs. For the most part they provide a limited role in any system. Unless you can get the best of the best, it's wasteful to spend high picks on them.

From this article:

Zach Puchtel, who played power forward at Minnesota, will attend this weekend's rookie mini-camp. Puchtel, 6-6 and 250 pounds, played one year of football at Harvard before transferring to play basketball.

Wonder what position the Bears think he can play? Anyone know what he played at Harvard?

The Crimson[/url]"]Puchtel arrived at Harvard in 2001 after being recruited by Harvard coach Tim Murphy to be a tight end on the Crimson football team.

Dr. Z comments on the Bears draft: "Offense finished 29th, defense second last year, so we draft for defense, boys, and let those smart-ass writers go figure it out on their own. Oh, is that so? Is that so? Well, we'll show you. D, how's that? Take that home to your parents. "You sure you don't want to go to bed and finish this tomorrow?" the Redhead says. Nah, I'm rolling along just fine." After his prophect for the bears 2005 season he should really just leave a blank space every time he wants to comment on the Bears.

i'd would have liked to have gotten lewis, but i would have settled for a big, white milk truck like fasano--someone who can punish opponents like heath miller, shockey, or a healthy kleinsasser.

i don't know anything about the guys we signed via FA, but i'd imagine that desmond clark will start for yet another year.

it seems that a brass so hellbent on crafting a team in the mold of the 2005 steelers (non- 3-4, tho) or 2000 ravens would realize that those teams would have been rather ordinary without their respective TE's.

oh well, i guess having a bunch of skinny, newly transitioned WR's are much better to have with a relatively inexperienced QB than a large, punishing, sure-handed, posession TE.

They said one of them is very good at catching but not blocking and the other is the opposite very good at blocking.

There was nothing wrong with Gould. He was automatic within 40 and a lot of his misses (40-49) came in EXTREMELY crappy weahter conditions (as was the case with the SF kick).

Gould had the 29th most points from kickers last year. He was 23rd in FG%. He was 3/8 from 40-49 and his longest was 45. He didn't even attempt a 50+ because the coaches knew he didn't have any business kicking in the NFL. He got the job by default when the veteran melted down. And he was very bad at kickoffs. They need to replace him.

According to ESPN, the Bears signed free agent RB Tony Hollings to a two-year contract. No terms were mentioned. I see this as a sign that they are trying to trade Jones; they wouldn't need Hollings if they already have Jones, Benson, and Peterson.
