unless the money is absurd or there's crazy player options/buyouts in play here, i'd MUCH rather have preston wilson for a year than jacque for 3.

no kidding. the jones signing makes no sense.

I've said it before, it bears repeating--we aren't REALLY on the hook for Jones for three years. It took that to get him signed, but the contract was structured as 3/4/5 with a $4MM signing bonus THIS YEAR.

So in 2006, we're paying Jones $7MM (ugh), or $1MM more than the guy he replaces (Burnitz). For the last two years of his contract though, Jones will make just $9MM, which is more reasonable.

Given that cost, if Jones has even a marginally acceptable year, and you don't want him beyond 2006, you can certainly trade him next year with that contract, no problem. Maybe you eat a modest amount of money, but no big deal.

We're only TRULY on the hook to Frere Jacques for 2006.

Do you have a link where it says that the entirety of the signing bonus is up front?

No, but I read it in more than one place at the time. I don't know how to search older Rotoworld posts, but I'm sure it's on there. Maybe cubs.com too??

The $4M signing bonus gets paid over 3 years each January. So, from a payroll standpoint:

2006 - $4.34m

2007 - $5.33m

2008 - $6.33m

I can't seem to find any contract info in previous Jones entries at Rotoworld, or in the cubs.com story. I think there's another cubs.com story with contract details that I couldn't find though, there normally is.

To read old news on Rotoworld, go to the player search bar at the top of the screen, type in the last name, click on the player you are doing the search for, and then when the player comes up, click on "previous news".

To save you the trouble, Rotoworld never gave a break down of Jacque's signing bonus.

Does anyone know if Wilson is known as a pull hitter? If so, he could have some fun with those Little League dimensions in LF.

Nice job by the Stros here, at least compared to what we did with Jones.

He's the type of player that would perform better under incentive based contracts rather than a guaranteed one.

Is it me, or are there fewer and fewer of those in MLB?

What's that...

I've questioned Wilson's approach to the game in the past, mentally, I don't think he has the proper focus. I've been wrong about questioning his effort though, he is known for having a very good work ethic. His problems lately have been more physical than anything else.

With that said, I'd like to see him press more and put more focus into the mental side of things.

Jones ops versus righties ~ .814

Wilson ops versus righties ~ .756 & half those AB's came as a Rockie. Fwiw Wilson's overall ops dipped from .813 w/ Colorado to .771 / Washington.

Since the Cubs can always move Jones after this year, the Wilson signing isn't far superior...

I really can't buy into your thinking as a sound way of doing a risk assessment. Your thinking would make any moderate-sized front-loaded multi-year contract look safe, which is certainly not the case, especially for a mediocrity like Jones, who is making starter's money, but is a significant risk to perform poorly enough that no contender will want him as an everyday player after 2006.

This kind of thinking will never land you the Cub GM job.

If I recall correctly, Wilson and Encarnacion have been the "worst case" around here. We can't have it both ways.
