I am not insulting you. That is my point, trading these prospects is a good idea. I would trade any of them because we do not have any can't miss prospects, none. Yes, some may work out nicely, but none should be untouchable. It was a joke before the Rule V draft with all the handwringing over Barandon sing for God sake, just like the pitcher a few years ago from MIT. IF I can get a player like Tejada for Murton, Cedeno, Pie- I sure would do it.

I know you're aware that there's a difference between trading a player and losing a player in the Rule 5 draft. Were you happy with how the Sisco situation played out?

Aren't you being overdramatic about the handwringing over Sing? JeffH laid out a good explanation for why he wouldn't be taken, and he was right. I wouldn't have liked losing Sing because I do have some hopes that he could at least be trade bait in the future or a serviceable MLB backup player.

But to ease your concerns -- I didn't lose sleep over it. Nor did I wring my hands. You seem to have been more agitated over my concern than I was.

Most of the concerns I saw expressed over a Tejada trade involved losing Prior, not prospects.

Edited to fix quotes.

So is the Grissom signing coming soon?

Yeah, he'll probably get 3 yrs./15 million

Ok, I just got here and this thread is over 10 pages. Cliff Notes version, please.

Someone says Grissom's agent said he's gonna sign with the Cubs, and then people talked about how dumb that would be and then people started arguing with each other.

There was an article in a denver newspaper saying Grissom might sign with the Cubs. The other 9 and a half pages is arguing.

As they wait for movement on the Tejada front, the Cubs are expected to begin offering non-guaranteed contracts to a few players for spring training. Among those the Cubs likely will bring in for a look is center fielder Marquis Grissom, who turns 39 next April. San Francisco released Grissom last August after he had missed most of the season with hamstring problems, finishing with a .212 average in 44 games.

Thats the first mention of this I have seen, outside of the Denver post.

Yes, I spend entirely too much time on NSBB. Thanks for pointing that out.

I like the idea of bringing in Grissom the more I look at it, a guy that kills lefties, can steal a base, plays great defense, lay down a bunt, hit for a little power. For the League min. He's a bench player not a starter.

As long as Dusty understands the bolded part, I agree. How sad is it when you really believe that your manager will play a 39 year old has-been who hit .212 last year over a promising young outfielder who has had success on the big league level? It's the life we lead.

Somebody also threw out some obscure stats to make somebody completely unrelated to this thread seem more impressive than what they really are. Then there was more arguing.

I'm guessing Grissom will be used as Eric Karros was in 2003. He'll face all the lefties, plus the righties he has good career numbers against, and Murton will sit on those days. Mabry's playing time in the OF will suffer some. He'll probably have to wait to for Aram's first injury or Murton's first slump before he gets significant time.

The notion that Dusty will do the "right thing" is dubious at best. Grissom will be the latest in a long line of worthless players used by Baker to destroy this team.

This will be a minor-league nonguaranteed contract, much like all nonroster guys sign. Because of his age, it's unlikely Grissom would go to Iowa if he doesn't make the team. That sets him apart from, say, the Calvin Murray type player. As was pointed out above on a good post, he'd probably have a Karros-type role, but in no way to the Cubs envision him as an everyday player.

Gary Hughes and Grissom go way back, from their Montreal days. This will draw a few jeers here, but Grissom is known to be one of the top "character" guys in baseball and a positive influence in every clubhouse he's been in.

I'll be back from vacation Monday. Happy New Year all.

Nothing good can come from having Marquis Grissom on this team.

Nothing.

Bruce seems to disagree with you.

I don't agree or disagree. I'm just pointing out what I know and what I've heard about the guy. (Marquis and I could wish each other a happy birthday on the same day, though. But I'm exactly 10 years older!)
