Denver Post"]Even as the Rockies hammer out a deal for Harris, they are seeking to add a right-handed hitting reserve outfielder. Gone are Eric Byrnes (Arizona) and Marquis Grissom - whose agent said he will sign with the Chicago Cubs - leaving

EDIT: Update:

Sun-Times"]

[The Cubs] are expected to reveal that veteran outfielder Marquis Grissom has agreed to terms on a minor-league contract for 2006.

Oh lord another Dusty guy.

Why is Grissom a "Dusty guy"?

He's very old, very bad, very impatient.

But contrary to what many think, he never played in SF while Dusty was there.

He'll be 39 this season, has substandard career numbers and was absolutely brutal last season. This would be just another example of the idiocy of this management team.

No way Hendry is THAT dumb. Murton will outproduce Grissom, and Mabry is already a good enough 4th OF, and Hairston is decent enough at that role as well.

Neither Hairston or Mabry is close to being a "good enough" 4th OF.

Except when compared to Grissom...

I've gotta believe (or hope) that this isn't accurate.

The only way this isn't a terrible idea is if Grissom is signed to sweep the dugouts after the game. Of course if he's in the stadium Dusty will play him regularly.

Good enough to the point where we don't need to sign another outfielder, unless they have at least a .900 OPS.

Completely disagree. They need another OF. Preferably one that is better than any of the current guys (and an 800 OPS would probably do that). But at the very least they need a decent 4th OF, because their 3 starters are already weak, and the bench guys aren't any good either.

I wonder if this is a move that gives the Cubs a chance to move Murton.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

This stuff doesn't even shock me anymore. There has to be some Trib shareholders that are huge Cub fans that can inform the powers that be that someone really needs to put a stop to this chirade.

I'm looking forward to how much they give Grissom to be the LF start..... uh,er back up to Murton.

Could it just be a minor league deal with a ST invite? Has Grissom reached that "I'm really bad and old and just want a chance" phase of his career yet?

Sounds about right.

Good Lord, wtf is going on? Is Hendry in a contest to see how badly he can mismanage available funds/prospects/young phenom pitchers? This offseason has been a nightmare.

I highly doubt he's getting a guaranteed contract. He sure had a down year last year (was he hurt?), but if he reverts to his 2004 numbers, he'd be useful on the bench, probably our best power off the bench. Note I said bench.

No way he plays over Murton.
