My first two cars were made by GM, but I currently drive a Mazda Tribute. I like it because it is a smaller version of an SUV. It gives me the room I need and drives really well.

When I'm buying a car, I really don't give a rats' behind who made it.

When I first opened this poll, I thought it was going to be about drinking foreign or domestic beer.

I did too, but didn't want to admit it

As did I. Domestic- car and beer.

Car was cheap, so is the beer. I'm broke.

However, I drove a nissan for 3 years, and did not have one problem with it, except for the whole getting stolen thing. Prefer foreign, last longer, less problems-based on my experiences (personal and work).

Domestic for both until my wife's uncle started bringing me Molson. This ain't the Molson you can get in stores -- his neighbor is from Canada and brings the good stuff to him. Take off, eh, Canuck beer is the best.

All my cars are from GM, and their VINs lead with "1," indicating that they were made right here. Those two conditions must be met before I buy, and I'm proud to say so.

I'll be picking up another one tomorrow. :D

Quality over loyalty ---> Foreign!

(I owned a brand new GM once, and it was an absolute nightmare. I'll take a 10 year-old Japanese car over American any day.)

(I owned a brand new GM once, and it was an absolute nightmare. I'll take a 10 year-old Japanese car over American any day.)

There are Japanese and European nightmares sold every day; no company makes perfect cars. The quality surveys (reality) don't match your perception.

Nightmare tales like yours can be countered with tales of faithful, dependable service.

I drive a GM car, my third concesutive. I anxiously await the day when I can afford to buy a nice Japanese or German car.

So you don't think America makes any "nice" cars?

I drive american because american companies are the only ones that make roomy cars (well, at a reasonable price. But I'm outraged whenever I see something like a toyota landcruiser which has an enormous wheelbase and a tiny interior)

I'm always amused when I hear the foreign quality thing, as most people who espouse it don't even seem to have their personal experiences match their expectations.

Anyway, worst problem I've had in the 8 years I've owned this dodge is the headlight switch pulling off (it popped right back on). I've got no complaints.

4 Runner with 155,000 miles with absolutely no problems. The wife has an Accord with even more miles with only regular mantenance costs. It has been incredibly inexpensive to drive for the last 7 years.

I won't rule out domestic vehicles when the time comes to replace hers (soon), but I'd be hard pressed to convince her to get anything but another Honda.

Cars I have owned

Audi 5000

Ford Ranger

Nissan nx1600

Jeep Wrangler

Pontiac Grand Prix

Cadilliac Deville

Buick Park Ave

Out of all of those, the one I had the longest was the Nissan. It is also the only car I ever owned that I did not put 1 penny into, aside from regular maintence. Ranger fell apart. Pontiac blew up on highway. Cadillac died in winter, never started again. Buick, just spent $600 on repairs. I worked at a Honda/Pontiac dealership for 2 years, and both makes did have their own problems, and I can offer nothing to say that foreign cars are indeed built better. However, in my experiences, the Nissan was by far the best built car I have ever owned. If I would quit getting deals on domestic cars (all my grandma friends), I would go back to a Nissan in a second.

How can you find out what the different numbers mean? My truck is a Mercury, but the Vin starts with a "4"....

4 is US as well. 2 is Canad, 3 is Mexico,J is japan, K is Korea, Germany is W, that is all I remember.

The 10th number should tell you what year it was made 88 is J, 89 is K, and so on (skip O, Q, U, and Z, 2001 starts at 1).

#s 4-8 tell the body style, engine type, model, etc

2nd digit is manufacturer. I think Mercury is M

11th number tells you what plant iit was assembled at.

I think all that is right. It has been a few years since I have had use any of that info. (I used to sell GM and Honda parts in the service dept. of a dealership)

If your truck is real old, I don't think any of that applies

My friends and I have a name for those small SUVs. I won't say it on this board but it rhymes with "itch ruck"

Yeah, pre-1981 cars use a different, manufacturer-specific system.

Lead numbers 4 and 5 are used in America by Ford Motor.
