I would assume Hendry is pushing hard for Zito so he can spin him to Orioles for Miggy or the Phillies for Abreu.

Fine by me. Better him than Prior. Unless it's him AND Prior! Naw, Hendry isn't that dumb...right?

I guess Hendry does read my material. :D

Actually, we should still be very afraid if he is honestly pursuing Zito.

Would it be Zito or Prior that Hendry would send to Phily for Abreu?

Who would Phily covet more? Zito, in the last year of his contract, or Prior who has several years before free agency?

And we all know how Hendry likes his lefties.

Check out the Cub Reporter at all-baseball.com. It spins the Jones signing as a way to trade Murton as part of a package for Zito who would then be part of a package for Abreu or Tejada. It's the silver lining approach to the Jones signing.

I personally would keep Zito. A top 3 of Z-Zito-Prior would be awfully intimidating, and if healthy, would nearly keep you in the race on their own. Put Jones back in left, sign Hidalgo and let he and Corey battle it out for playing time in Right. At the very least an outfield of LF- Jones, C-Pierre, RF-Hidalgo/CPunk would be fantastic defensively. If neither is panning out come June or so, THEN look to acquire a bat for rightfield again at that point(small market team looking to unload..ala ARam, Lee)

Zambrano

Zito

Prior

Wood

Maddux

Best case.....whoa

Is Zito better than Jerome Williams? Not looking for a fight, but just asking.

I certainly believe so, Zito is a horse, as well as being electric when really on, and can throw a lineup off for days(especially sandwiched between to righthanded fireballers)

86 wins...5 straight 200+inning seasons...3.50/1.22 career #'s in the AL.....CY Young.......post season experience.

I like Williams, don't get me wrong, especially for the $$$.

Does this really happen? We hear it all the time with Wakefield and the knuckleball, but is it true? Maybe it does, but I find it hard to believe. If a hitter sees a Zito curve on Tuesday it will make it tougher to hit a Prior fastball on Wednesday? How?

I'm starting to hate the hot stove.

Well, what's the likelihood Hendry would have any interest in Abreu anyway? He had no interest in Giles.

Maybe once he trades for Zito, he'll shop for a another outfielder and call it good.

Supposedly Zito isn't going to negotiate for a long-term contract with Baltimore if dealt and that cooled Baltimore's interest in somehow including him in a Tejada deal. I don't know if the refusal to negotiate was due to the O's or due to a desire to test free agency.

How good could we be if we trade for Zito and call it an offseason?

Is that a 90 win team? Playoff team? A team as good as the White Sox last year? I guess it all comes down to health, but assuming they don't suffer any HUGE injuries, how far can they go?

Oakland has been interested in Frank Thomas. Trading for Zito would free up the cash to add him. That would then make their outfield crowded, which could make one of Kotsay, Bradley, Kielty or Payton available in that same trade.

Wow, you make a good point. Any 3 game series against any of those 3? Teams would worry about where the runs come from. But as you pointed out. Its that blasted HEALTH issue. And I believe that rotation and line-up is as strong if not stronger then the Sox last year.

who reporterd that the Cubs where after Zito? which reporter on WGN?

Kaplan said that he heard that Hendry was pushing hard to acquire Zito, and P. Sullivan said that he had heard that from his sources also.

I think if they where all healthy that rotation could make the bullpen that much better Williamson , Wuertz,Nova, Rusch fighting for spots to go with that already strong core group you have listed.

I read the trade of Bradley killed their interest in Thomas.

I wonder what kind of package it would take to get Zito?

Somehow, I think Beane is going to aim for Pie.

No thanks, then. I don't do any trade with Pie that nets a 1 year rental.

Posted
Brandon Sing seems to be a Beane type player. Hill,Sing & Wellemeyer enough for Zito? or would Williams or Guzman have to be part of a package for Zito?

Wellemeyer trades are my favorite.

I would guess something along the lines of Murton, Williams, and Marshall or Murton, Hill, and Gallagher for Zito. Then Hendry spinning Zito into Tejada, and signing Preston Wilson for RF.

Why spin Zito off for Tejada? What if Hendry can trade for both without losing Prior or Z? The longer this circus goes on with Tejada (because you know he's going to continue to throw a fit), the more likely it is the O's would be forced to lower their demands...What an offseason that would be!

That would be awesome, but I doubt the Cubs could afford the 20m in salary it would cost to add Zito and Tejada. And I'm not sure we have enough good prospects left to get both.

why would oakland want to sell off zito when they have the best team in the west, and one of the best teams in the AL?

the cubs need a big bat more than they need a #3 starter.

Angels > A's

The Cubs need a 5 hitter & a #3.

Not enough prospects to do both. I wouldn't (and hope Hendry wouldn't) want to mortgage the future for those 2. You're looking at at least 6-7 prospects going in those deals.

So we would probably lose all of Murton, Williams, Marshall, Hill, Guzman, Pie, Dopirak, and Sing which does hurt. It's a tough call.
