Nothing this team does shocks me anymore.

I wonder how much people will be lauding our outfield defense when Jones is struggling to produce a .300 OBP>

I find it humorous that the Cubs are willing to trade away Cpatt, but are willing to sign a Cpatt clone in J. Jones. Why not just keep Cpatt if all we can get is Jones. Cpatt will give pretty much the same production for half the price. If this happens I'm not going to be very happy.

I made a post around the deadline asking if Jones had turned the corner. He was hitting .274/.350/.480. Of course he had one of the worst months of August in the history of baseball, and a nearly as bad September.

But if he can keep those April-July numbers up for 2-3 years, this could be a great deal for the Cubs.

I've said it before, and nothing will change my mind...

I'd rather have a good-hit, average defender than an average hitter with GG defense.

Edward K from Indianapolis is going to fall in love with Jones.

This season is not the right time to sign a starting pitcher considering the contracts which were given out.

I really think Weaver is undervalued and gets a reasonable deal.

One word:

Boras

I read he'll accept arb if he doesn't get a good deal.

Boras can only do so much. Weaver isn't going to command huge money. Besides, the Cubs have a decent working relationship with Boras; he's the agent for both Zambrano and Maddux (he's also Corey's agent and I don't see him having much leverage for him in the near future).

He'll get more than Matt Morris's 3\27.

Year, I'm just going by past rumors, as I think the Cubs don't have the right package of players for Philly & Abreu, so they're moving on.

I think they'd be wise to at least throw a semi-decent offer out there. If Philly rejects it, that forces Houston to up its' offer.

Even if we don't land him and don't expect to, I think it would be wise to make Houston pay as much as it can if they land him.

And yet it was better than Corey Patterson's June. Or his July. Or his August. Or his September.

If Lidge really is on the table I don't think the Cubs can match the Astros.

What does have to do with anything?

It doesn't. Just interesting.

I love the Jacque Jones signing! He was great in the first half of 2005! How much money do you think I should bet on the Cubs winning the World Series in 2006?

My guess is that they have, but Philly wants a better pitcher. If Williams had another solid year under his belt perhaps a deal could be made.

Corey might want to consider switching agents at this point in his career. If he's having no luck finding a taker while he's still under contract, how much interest will he garner when teams find out Boras is his agent when he's on the market?

If Jones signs today, will Patterson be non-tendered afterall?

I think the chances of Jones being signed today are slim (I also don't see the Cubs dropping Corey and getting nothing in return).

Let's hope JJ doesn't leave all the Royals' cash on the table.

I think Patterson being tendered has more to do with organizational philosophy than positional need. While it certainly helps that our OF is a nightmare, I think the bigger thing is that non-tendering Patterson would be perceived as giving up on him, getting nothing for all that work and investment into him. Whether that's the right decision or not, I see that playing a huge role in whether or not they non-tender Corey.

Agree cause there's no way Hendry gives up Prior or Z.

This shouldn't suprise anyone. Hendry has stated several times that his priorities for the off-season was getting a lead-off hitter, improving the BP & the defense. JJ is a GG caliber defender.

I don't think too many people are surprised, just disgusted.

Disgusted is an over- reaction. They have no idea what JJ will do in a Cubs uniform. I would have never guessed & most baseball people I have spoken to, would have never guessed that D.Lee would turn into Pujols in 05'.

I'm willing to see it play out, before I completely chastise Hendry & Cubs management. This is why grading teams & GM's on their off-season is absolutely ridiculous.

The thing is, we dont want to have to catch lightning in a bottle to be good. The fact that Hendry is most likely going to settle for him is sickening. Yea, he could turn around his entire career and become Arod. But really, Why do we have to settle for "he could. He might." The fact that a team with a 100 Mil payroll is settling for a guy like JJ is disgusting. Thats not an overreaction.

On the plus side, if properly used in a platoon, JJ can produce significantly better than his overall numbers suggest. Here are his career OPS vs righties:

1999:814

2000:817

2001:794

2002:952

2003:834

2004:775

2005:814

We currently don't have anyone for him to platoon with, but there are plenty of 4th OF righties out there who can mash lefties that we could pick up. That platoon would improve our production in RF by about 50 OPS, which is still nowhere near enough. Accepting the rockies offer of Bigbie for Welly and platooning him would have been a much better option.
