Even though he has interest from more than a half-dozen teams, Eduardo Perez isn't close to signing.

"To be honest, I have no idea what's going to happen," Perez said. "There have been a number of teams interested, which is good. Now we'll see what the opportunities are." The Yankees, Indians, Cubs, Padres and Marlins are believed to be among those most interested.

Talk about adding a "threat" to your bench. I would love the Cubs to sign this cat. Perez (the good one, not Nefti) and Mabry would be a dang good 1-2 option in the late inning.

how is it that this guy -- .255/.368/.497 -- is probably going to sign for less than a mil to be a back up, but jacque jones -- .249/.319/.438 -- is looking at 3-4 year offers for 5 mil/year? obviously age and position are big differences, but geez...

I wanted this guy for the bench two years ago when he was with the Cardinals. He's a pure splits hitter, but he absolutely mashes with favorable matchups. 900 OPS last year against LHP. 868 OPS for his career. He'd be a real nice complement to Mabry on the bench. Heck yeah, sign him.

Perez is a great addition to any bench. The Cards should bring him back to platoon the outfield with Gooch and John Rodriguez.

I hope Jocketty checks in on NSBB once in a while.

IMO the Cubs are going to get a left bat for the OF. So far they have:

Lee 1B

Walker 2B/1B/LF

Cedeno SS/2B

Perez SS/2B/3B

Hairston 2B/CF/LF

Ramirez 3B

Murton LF

Mabry LF/1B/3B

Patterson CF/LF

Barrett C/3B

Blanco C

So they haveone opening correct since the Cubs are probably going to go with 13 pitchers?

who would you rather have starting in RF this year, Eduardo or jack jones?

take contracts into account too.

Easy, Jack Jones has a career OBP of .285, and plays a dead man's RF. Of course, he probably has a great contract playing in 1884...

you may say that i spelled his name wrong, but when he plays for the cubs, there's exactly zero chance that i won't be calling him jack jones. unless i come up with some french equivalent of jones.

NEVERMIND- my sister just reminded my of batgirl's nickname for him. it will be freedom jones all the way.

The priority of getting Perez increases w/the signing of Jones, not an ideal platoon, but more productive than Jones facing LH'ers for the year.

I agree but will Baker actually do that? My money is that he doesn't.

If he could platoon Walker/Perez, anything is possible.

I think that since Jones is suppose to be a very good OF he doesn't come out of the lineup...much like what Baker did with Burnitz.

You're probably right, sometimes I try to give Baker more credit than he deserves.

It's obvious that Jones is an ideal platoon candidate, who'll produce produce between .760-780 for the year, against RH'ers he'll produce between .790-.810 and against LH'ers, it'll be in the mid to high 6's.

The ideal solution would be to get a RH'ed RF'er who mashes LH'ers, but it makes too much sense.

Wouldn't it be nice if Hendry and Baker thought that? That's why a lot of these moves just frustrate the heck out of me, they just seem to miss the things they should do to make this team better. The resources are there but they seem to refuse to use them.
