He looked a little like Bernie from "Weekend at Bernie's" introducing Pierre. Perhaps they've transformed him into a robot and are in double-secret negotiations to make Theo Epstein the real GM...

well now that we know we are 80-85 win team, when we do we start talking about 2007? in my book jacque jones already signed with us and the off-season is a wrap.

now THAT is a cubs fan for you. bitter, realistic, and insane. they should do a research study on cubs fans being driven to insanity with me being the lead case study.

We sign JJones to a 3 year deal and Hendry as well as Baker should be fired on the spot. Mediocrity at its finest.

I think Toronto just signed him to a 6 year deal at 414 mil. The Dodgers were offering a paltry 5/340. (man, they're going crazy this year)

Wherever he is, I think we all know he's not out spending any money...

There he goes again.................driving up the market for overweight GM's with a donut fetish

Go Hawks!!

Again how are we an 80-85 win team. I don't see how our moves improved us 1-6 games next year

I think that if you assume that Eyre and Howry give Baker enough pen options so as to not completely use up Wuertz by June 15th, and if you (correctly, IMO) assume Pierre gives us about .50-.75 more OBP points out of the leadoff spot, you would win anywhere from 1-6 more games on average. Just by default, we've upped the odds tha Aramis or Lee come up with a guy on more often with Pierre leading off.

However, just making these tweaks doesn't make us a contender. It makes us somewhat improved over last season, which is not Jim Hendry's job. Hendry's job is to make sure we are the best possible team going into the season.

Then again there is no more Nomar, no RF as of yet and we are also hoping for 2 rookies to pan out.

Nomar didn't give us anything anyway last year. Even the end of the season was less than what Aramis would have given you had he not fell over 1B trying to prove fans wrong about his lack of hustle with a bad leg.

As far as RF goes, I'm assuming in my post that we sign Jones, Wilson or Encarnacion and they give you just about exactly what Burnitz gave you, no more, no less.

The rookies are a case of Murton being clearly better that Hollandsworth, and more prepared for being an everyday LF than Dubois. His projections for 2006 all look about right, and are all upgrades over what we had in LF most of the important part of last season. Cedeno should at worst give you exactly what Neifi gave you in 2005.

And Derrek Lee is unlikely to produce the way he did last year.

But to make up for it you assume Aramis doesn't miss 6 weeks, and you have the Murton gain over the LF's in 2005 to factor in. Also, more opportunities for Lee and Aramis thanks to Pierre can somewhat help Lee avoid a major regression from his run producing numbers.

I have no problem relying on Cedeno and Murton. In fact I think it's about time we tried to give some farm guys a chance. That being said, I'm increasingly skeptical of what Hendry is going to do with RF.

There is really no one, all options are bad to horrible. I'm hoping damage is minimized and no lengthy contracts are given to crappy ball players.

I would say so too, but Dusty is still managing this team and Neifi is not only on the roster, but getting paid like a starter.

He's waiting for the 2007 season to make is big moves....The famous "Good Ship Wait till next Year" has already set sail for 2007 without even docking for 2006......

Just wondering. Haven't heard anything in a while.

I think he'll re-surface when more is known about the status of arbitration eligible players, i.e., which players are tendered vs. non-tendered. Just a guess.

On what date will we know which players are tendered and non-tendered?

Any big names people are expecting to be non-tendered?

There are always more players rumored to be non-tendered than actually wind up being non-tendered. What usually happens is that most of the non-tender candidates get traded before the deadline.

Review the list of arb eligibles for players eligible for the 3rd time who play for low budget teams. Those guys are usually likely candidates. Craig Wilson is an example.

Once the Cubs see Wrigley packed for every game in '06 even though they never even tried to build a winner, the Trib execs are gonna go "Ooooohhh, yeah. Now I remember, we're the Cubs. We don't have to try!"
