Bruce Levine was reporting on the 8 or 8:20 ESPN 1000 update that the Sox offer for Tejada would be McCarthy, Uribe, and prospects, and that the Cubs 5 player offer was still out there. Levine also said that don't believe what is being said out of Baltimore, Tejada is on the trading block.

If the Sox get Tejada, you will see my sig line change to call for the firing of teh entire Cubs front office.

If true, the White Sox would be dumb to trade McCarthy and better off trading off Garland.

I wouldn't call it dumb. The Orioles aren't going to want Garland for Tejada. They'll want McCarthy.

Right; Garland is in his walk year, and if Williams insists on trading him and not McCarthy, JH's offer should be more attractive.

McCarthy would be off limits in almost any trade, they have 5 pitchers all past the point of FA or when the arbitration system favors the owners, McCarthy is currently the 6th and is ready to step up in a rotation.

I would not trade McCarthy in that deal, if it take more prospect(s) to include Garland over McCarthy, so be it.

You include McCarthy or Garland, any surplus offer by the Cubs will not be likely to beat it.

If the O's were close to winning and Garland were the last piece, I might agree. But they are not close, and to me, Garland's trade value is far less than McCarthy's b/c of his contract situation.

And I agreed with that point from BBB, but if it came down to trading McCarthy or trading for Tejada, I'd rather have McCarthy, Uribe, and prospects.

McCarthy will be something special.

But why would the Orioles want Garland for 1 year? He'll be gone free agency the next year.

Tejada has a lock down, long term contract. It would take a special deal to move him. Trading him for a 1 year rental and lesser prospects is not what I'd call a special deal.

Garland isn't a top of the rotation arm, either. I just don't see any way how Baltimore would accept Garland over McCarthy in return for their MOST prized possession.

Increase the prospects in the deal, Balt. would want Garland and they would probably try and work out an extention if possible.

Garland has value and I'd work from the premise of trading either Garland or Contreras and go from there.

If Balt. was dead set on McCarthy, then, you don't make the trade.

probably right, but I just cannot see Balt doing a deal fro Garland; it makes no sense for them.

I don't know if I can agree with this. The White Sox just won a World Series. They have won over a lot of fans. They have probably even converted the casual Cub fan that is tired of losing.

By making this trade, they have added crazy offense in Tejada and Thome, meanwhile upgrading the rotation from El Duque to Vazquez.

They may eventually fade to nothing in the next 5 years, but they will be able to enjoy the next 5 years knowing they can continue being competitive.

Maybe from their standpoint, they forsee empty seats in Wrigley in the coming years while everyone comes to see Miggy in the Cell.

If I was the White Sox, I'd include McCarthy in a deal for Miggy.

Maybe, but the thing is, they don't have to. The Cubs are the team in dire straits. The Sox are sitting pretty, and have already significantly improved their team this year. The Cubs are in the crapper, and have made minimal improvements.

funny how last year when the season started most experts & fans thought the situation was exactly the opposite with the cubs favorites & the sox going nowhere. the season doesnt start for a long time and there are still free agents out there who can help the cubs and trades to be made. i cant see giving up on the season because of how the team looks on paper (especially not in december!).

There are times when it is wise to mortgage the future and times when it isn't. This isn't one of those times. They have a great young pitcher making the minimum, they have a very solid team that has a great chance of winning 95-100 again and even higher if the pitchers repeat.

You need to look into the long-term as well as the short.

I agree with you on a lot of things, but this isn't one of them. The White Sox have put themselves in a wonderful position. They have given the team a name. They have won the hearts of many Chicagoans.

They are in a position to double, triple and possibly quadruple season ticket sales. Trading for a guy like Miggy would do that, IMO.

It does somewhat mortgage the future in regards to McCarthy being included in a deal for Miggy, but the team is definitely built to win NOW. When Thome's skills have declined to a point he is no longer contributing, and the team is no longer in a position to be competitive, then they can trade Miggy to a team that will give up their "McCarthy" for him. That might only be a year or two down the road.

They just won a World Series. They don't have to be conservative. They've made the moves this offseason that put them in a position to possibly win again this coming year. Tejada just puts them one step closer. I'd make that deal.

Posted

They've already done everything you mentioned w/out trading McCarthy, they've increased ticket sales, they've increased their market share in the city and deservingly so.

They have the chance to get better McCarthy will be better than Hernandez, he'll be better than Garland, Contreras, and Vazquez which is a great 1-5. He'll be right there with Garcia.

If Balt. is set on trading Tejada, the White Sox have the most to offer even w/out giving up McCarthy.

Why buy high?

McCarthy is the future of that team. He'll be what Prior should've been in '04 and '05.

If they want a SS, go for Lugo. I would rather have Lugo and McCarthy than Tejada.

Who said anything about giving up on the season? The Cubs are desperate for improvement because they were bad last year and haven't done much this offseason. I never said they can't have a good season. Anything could happen. But if you want to improve your chances, you better do whatever you can to get better. And since the Cubs chances, as they stand now, are extremely low, they have to do more than most teams, especially the White Sox.

I totally agree BBB...

the thing is, there is alot of $$$ to be made in Chicago. If the Cubs continue to falter, and lose, the Sox could start to errode at the Cubs fan base. I see KW and Co. going for the juggler here. Hit the Chicago baseball scene where it hurts.

This is especially bad for the cubs, becuase now they will have to WAY overpay for Tejada.

1) to GET him

2) to keep the Sox from taking him

Posted
In a McCarthy, Uribe, and prospects deal could the Sox even afford him? With Thome, Paulie and Vazquez deal I don't see where the money is coming from.

Arizona is paying part of Vazquez' deal, and Phily is paying a big portion of the Thome deal. Big Skirt is off the books, as is Carl Everett.

Maybe they can, maybe they can't. But, it might be a gamble worth taking.

Sales and attendence will be up for certain. They possibly could. And I do agree with the rest of you. If the WS end up with Tejada I dont think you can discount how big they will be in Chicago.

The mayors office.

I wouldn't even be that surprised.

Can the Cubs trade Hendry to the Sox for KW?

Why would you want to downgrade at the GM spot? KW is a terrible GM, who got EXTREMELY lucky with his moves last yr. My bet....Javy Vazquez will stink with the Sox.

KW is by far a better GM than Jim Hendry. Sure there is some luck involved, but he works with half the payroll that Hendry does.

KW is not "by far a better GM than Hendry", he is far luckier. Kenny Williams was consider a crappy GM by the White Sox fans, just now he has a World Series trophy to blind them from the fact that Kenny Williams is still a crappy GM. In the past 3 yrs Hendry has been far "better then Williams." Hendry and the Cubs have been unfortunate with the breaks. I GUARANTEE it, after then end of 2006, White Sox fans will be screaming to get rid of Williams, again.

BAHAHHAHAHAA That is so ridiculous. Spoken like a true optimistic Cubs fan. The White Sox were lucky the cubs have been unfortunate with the breaks. That was a laugher.

Trade Garland ($6million) and Uribe ($3 million), get a couple a million a year (for 4 years) back from the O's and your not far from Tejada's salary. Put McCarthy in the starting rotation.
