According to Peter Gammons, Burnett's agent just wants to check with the Cardinals first, before the deal is finalized. I think the Blue Jays are offering something like 52 million? I can't remember how many years we are talking about.

Yeah but Jocketty was lurking in the back ground literally when Gammons reported that. He quickly walked off with his phone in his hand.

Maybe he was getting the news from Burnett's agent.

I know, I'm just saying I'm not believing either way until its official. Last year Gammons said Renteria to Cards was official only to learn he was wrong 5 minutes later.

Cards are meeting right now and have an opportunity to throw one last offer at him.

We guarantee 5 years, you can pretty much guarantee he'll be a Cardinal.

Otherwise, Burnett is out of the NL! Everybody wins! Woo-hoo!

i'd sign with the cards. winning is fun and so is counting your millions.

I guess it's a question of how much is a real shot at a WS worth to Burnett. For a difference of $5-$10 million I would go where I might actually get to win a WS or two. $50 million is already enough money for multiple lifetimes.

The Cards brass is meeting right now because Burnett told his agent to give them one more shot for the 5th year, and now Gammons is saying he'll sign with the Jays within 24 hours.

He's already won a WS so maybe it's all about the cash right now.

He did grow up a Cards fan. I'd definitely take the paycut to play for the Cubs were I in Burnett's shoes. That's a dream that people can't buy for 5-10M dollars.

Although, that said, he didn't pitch an inning in the playoffs... and threw 23 innings the entire 2003 season.

You have a point but if it were really about playing for the team you grew up rooting for he would have already signed with the Cardinals. i think it's fair to say he's seeking money and security (especially with his injury history).

Why wouldn't he just try to get both? Which is what he is doing.

I agree, and all the media reports point to his agent giving the Cardinals every opportunity to match the deal for 5 years. So far they haven't.

I don't care if Burnett grew up a Cardinals fan, if St. Louis doesn't guarantee the 5th yr, he'll be a Blue Jay.

IIRC, Burnett's pitching coach in the minors is the pitching coach for the BJ's.

Stark says 5/55, should be done tonight.

Thumbs up. Hopefully Walt pulls a Hendry and signs Jacque Jones now.

Gammons just said the Cards offer was 4 years at 48 Million.

Wow.

$48/4 to play for the cubs vs $55/5 for the blue jays? That would be an incredibly easy choice for me
