The Cardinals are determined to make a deal with Burnett work. Please refer back to our 6:45 PM update. Those issues are being discussed this evening between Cardinals General Manager Walt Jocketty, Darek Braunecker and Mark Rodgers. Jocketty has clear instructions from Cardinals Chairman and General Partner Bill DeWitt.

J.P. Ricciardi has told Burnett's representatives that their current offer is Toronto's best and final offer. Ricciardi is expected to spend the rest of the evening exploring trades and setting up meetings for Tuesday.

That's from Inside the Dome; they're a Blue Jays fan site. Part of the Scout.com network. (Granted, some will question the reliability of their site..)

Also:

Reports surfacing earlier this afternoon that the Blue Jays have agreed to a deal with A.J. Burnett have been proved premature.

From ESPN.com,

After meeting with agent Darek Braunecker and partner Mark Rodgers, Ricciardi told reporters that no further discussions were scheduled for Monday night or Tuesday morning. He also said the Blue Jays haven't established a deadline for Burnett to say yes.

"We want a resolution just so we can move forward," Ricciardi said. "But we've gone this far. Another few days won't hurt."

It just seems as if Burnett is weighing his options. I think he's wanting the Blue Jays to either go to 5/60 or the Cardinals to go to 5/50.

I know I might be in the minority, but I hope the Cards do sign him to that stupid deal. 5 yrs for 50 mill, for somebody who has had 2 TJ surgeries is a huge risk, and 1 that Im not sure even the Cards can turn into gold. I really cant believe there are so many Cards fans that want him, when he is as fragile as Kerry Wood. Cards fans would you give Kerry Wood a 5 yr deal for 50 million? Also the all famous Kerry Wood has never won more than 15 games in a season that fans like to use....well AJ Burnett has never won more tha 12! Yes 12 games in a season! He is nowhere close to being deserving of the money, and I pray the Cards sign him just to watch him get hurt again. Also dont forgot AJ's 2nd half of the year last year.

I understand where you are coming from. The only thing that gives me hope is Duncan (our pitching coach) is great with vertern pitching.

I don't know the dimensions of the new Busch Stadium, but Burnett hasn't quite been all that impressive on the road in his career. Add the 2 TJS and I think 10-12 million is absolutely insane to consider.

Thats a big dent in the budget to have to rely on hope. Then again it is the Cards so you have reason to be positive about hope and luck, whereas us Cubs fans.....not so much

If I was a Cardinals fan I wouldn't even flinch at throwing money at Burnett, since we all know if he goes to STL he'll become Walter Johnson. I wonder why more players don't consider that when choosing where to sign...

No question, the numbers that are being thrown around are pretty freaky. But the Cards need another front line starter for the post season and AJ might be the answer. The Cards have a window of opportunity they are working with. Truth be told tho, I'd rather have another impact bat like Dunn.

Looks like the Nationals are getting in on the craziness. Rotoworld:

A.J. Burnett - S - Marlins

The Nationals have made a late offer for A.J. Burnett, according to CBS SportsLine's Scott Miller.

Apparently, it's a proposal similar to the Cardinals' four-year, $40 million proposal. Burnett's wife is from Bowie, Md., so it's believed he is interested in joining Washington, though whether it's preferable to St. Louis is something we may find out soon. The Jays are reportedly at five years and $55 million. Dec. 5 - 10:26 pm et

I thought the Cards had offered 4/$48, not 4/$40?

I'm torn. My Cubbie loving heart doesn't want them to get Burnett because they want him. At the same time, I honestly feel that if they do get him he won't live up to the hype. I might be wrong but I think he's a big risk for 5 years. He had his first TJS in 2000, his second in 2003, what does 2006 hold in store?

P.S. If the Baseball gods are going to allow flame throwers to have a healthy 2006 lets just hope that Kerry has gotten the memo.

I wondered why MLB.com bothered to reserve space on its front page about this earlier (figuring the Nats weren't serious contenders) This new development makes sense now.

A.J. Burnett - S - Marlins

The Washington Post is confirming that the Nationals have offered at least $40 million over four years for A.J. Burnett and says they're prepared to increase their offer.

They might go on to include a vesting option for a fifth year. "We jumped right into the middle of the fire, and I think we're a team that he's considering," Bowden said. "We made an offer that's very competitive." Dec. 5 - 11:47 pm et

The Tacoma News Tribune is also reporting that the Mariners have offered Kevin Millwood $44 million over four years and says the two sides could be close to a deal.

The deal may include an option for a fifth year and added incentives. Just one year ago, Millwood signed a deal that guaranteed him $3 million. If the Mariners thought he was such a good bet to stay healthy, where were they then? Dec. 6 - 12:10 am et

4\40 for Burnett will not get it done.

man lots of teams co*K blocking each other this year at the last minute. I don't remember this much of that happening last year, but maybe I have short memory.

Not just last year either. I don't ever recall an offseason like it.

Who knows anymore. Heck I still can't believe Burnett can get 5 years considering his history.

By Jerry Crasnick and Jayson Stark

DALLAS -- Right-hander A.J. Burnett moved closer to agreeing to a five-year, $55 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, as his agents and the team worked into the early morning Tuesday on final details in anticipation of wrapping up a deal later today.
