  1. They were blessed last year, but so is pretty much every team that wins the world series. You need to be lucky to win it all.
  2. I would believe Nolan Ryan hitting 103. The others, I'm not so sure about. Why? Cause he doesn't play right now?
  3. To Blueheart: I would guess with regards to "[expletive]" that your race may play a part in why you don't hear it. People are ignorant, but they're not stupid, and know that they can often get away with being morons and saying it around other non-blacks, but there's no way it'll fly if the person you're always insulting is actually there to hear it.
  4. Jam summed up my points in his earlier post far better than I was able to. And I'm with goony, I hear "[expletive]" more often than "[expletive]", and have heard it many times used to describe a non-black person.
  5. Guillen equated homosexuals and child molestors while in New York last year. Not sure about the context but Guillen did it. Link? Also, I agree with everything Rocket Sauce said. Of course you do, you're a Guillen apologist. Why don't you check everything I've said about it? I think it was awful, but Rocket Sauce is right, it is not the same as what Rocker said. Guillen called him a [expletive] out of spite, but not because he's gay. Rocker went off and called gay people "[expletive]" as well as referencing "some queer with AIDS." There's a big difference. It's a very small difference. Ozzie is using a term for gays as an insult. He is deriding gays whether he is talking about one specifically or using a title referring to them as something to tear down somebody else.
  6. Let's say he called someone in the media, say Dan Jiggets, a derragatory term for a black man (the same one Rocker used). What would the media's reaction be to this? To me they're all the same. Bigoted hateful words aren't any better than any other. Dispicable. that word can only be used in a racist way. you wouldn't call a white guy that out of anger and hatred for the guy. calling someone a [expletive] (and i can't stress enough how much of an idiot ozzie is for using that word, and he deserves to be shamed in the media for it) does not necessarily mean "i hate you because you are homosexual". i'm just answering the question posed in the subject. rocker's comments were made out of genuine hatred for the groups he was lambasting. ozzie's comments were made because he's a moron. What else can calling someone a [expletive] mean?
  7. This was the lead story on channel 5 news tonight,(Which is pretty ridiculous) but in Guillen's apology he used air quotes when talking about what he said offending somebody. He just doesn't get it.
  8. I'm surrounded by Sox fans. Homophobia is a pretty common theme. And a quibble with ndistops, Mariotti is actually a decent writer skill wise. He just chooses to be inflammatory because it's what gets/got him famous. There's a reason that once a month or so you'll get people dragging over a Mariotti article and saying they feel dirty by saying it's good. When he actually puts effort into a subject and does his research, he's a pretty good writer. But good writing doesn't sell papers.
  9. I'd take Howell over Gathright five days a week, and twice on Sundays. But theres still ONE day you love gathright. But the 2 times on Sunday he'd take Howell makes up for Not taking him on Saturday. There's 2 days he's not taking him, he's only specifying that of the 5 days in the week he'd take him twice on one of those 5(Sunday) He didn't say I'd take Howell over Gathright once five days a week, and twice on Sundays.
  10. So you're telling me we're not taking Aldriidge then ...Grrreat.
  11. I'm no lawyer, but if you were the players' union, wouldn't you be jumping all over this attempt at forced collusion?
  12. Carlton Fisk to the OF, trading Bobby Bonilla, and a bizarre obsession with Ron Hassey is his legacy. The Bonilla trade being the worst as Harrelson just randomly traded a great prospect who was having a good year for the big league club when the team was far out of the race. Imagine Hendry trading Pie for Lawton last year.
  13. I know it's not likely, but what if the Czechs win by more than 2? Wouldn't we have to win by less than 4 goals then?
  14. An anecdote I once heard about Gibson (he's a bit before my time... by about 30 years). I have no idea if it's true or not, but I like it: At Spring Training, a rookie was stepping into the box to face Gibson. The rookie starts digging into the box, and McCarver stops him. "Um, kid, you probably don't wanna do that," he says to the rookie. The rookie steps out of the box, KICKS THE DIRT BACK IN to replace the dirt he dug out. Gibson still drilled him. I don't get it. Why is this a good thing?
  15. Hernandez is on pace to throw less than 200 innings.
  16. I'm not saying we shouldn't criticize him. I'm saying this is going overboard. I myself even said I thought Ozzie was wrong. It's fine to criticize him, but calling him trash just seems a bit excessive. Why? Many people, myself included, feel that this is Guillen's SOP. He's a jerk, he's proven it in the past, and he's still proving it. Just because he happens to manage the White Sox doesn't mean we can't call him trash, such that we can claim some sort of moral high ground on White Sox fans. Trash is trash no matter what uniform they're wearing.
  17. I'm game. So when Steve Kline suggest that Mark Prior get hit by one, it's wrong, and it's okay for two of us to say it. I'm becoming less and less proud to be a Cub fan with comments lke this. There's a 4-page thread on Ozzie Guillen, a manager with a World Series ring and a competitive team this year, and it's all negative. So many "real" Cub fans talk about how obsessed with the Cubs Sox fans are, and how they're fickle, and don't exist. Judging by this section of the board and half the people that are/were Cub "fans," many of us aren't too far from that either. I feel like making some of you feel like that Sox pitcher last night. Grow up. I find it real tough to criticize a manager who just brought a World Series to a town where our manager does nothing but underachieve and make excuses. Yes, it was wrong, but how many of you wouldn't trade Guillen for Baker? How bout it's a 5 page thread because it's big news in baseball. There's a long thread on it over at baseballthinkfactory. Damn those fans and their white sox obsession. Poll up at ESPN, can't that network just get over the White Sox already!!! I think "Ozzie Guillen has a ring so don't criticize him" may be my new most hated internet-ism. Derek Jeter's 6 year reign of "count the ringzzzzzz" has finally ended. Nobody's talking about Ozzie's managing skills now, they're talking about the fact that he's a colossal prick, which has been mathematically proven already. Talking about what a godawful manager Baker is contributes NOTHING to the conversation, beyond the fact that nobody's talking about Guillen's relative skills and faults as a manager,(faults in a WORLD SERIES CHAMPION MANAGER???? IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!! BOB BRENLY 4 LYFE) holding managers up to the standard of "at least he's better than Dusty" is going to wind up banning us from criticizing 90% of the managers in baseball.
  18. Seeing how I can't see any way this could be considered a pr move, yes.
  19. Correct, but as I've read about him, he would have been a much more polished and sought after pitcher had he simply stuck to baseball instead of balancing both out. No matter the case, $8m in guaranteed money is hard to walk away from. If he was more polished and sought after he would've been higher than the 20th best prospect in the draft.
  20. (This is all under the assumption this is a 12 team or less league) Fire sale. There's not enough there to enter the top half of your league. See what kind of demand is out there for Kenny Rogers and Jorge Posada. Get anything you can for Sean Casey, Grudz, and Kenny Lofton. Should probably sell off Walker if you get a decent prospect in return. And stop drafting Cubs.
  21. I'd say look outside the Braves organization for the time being for a closer. I can't see Reitsma having much value in a non-holds league the rest of the way.
  22. I believe most people thought he would be a Top 20 pick had he focused solely on baseball. BA rated him as the 20th best prospect in the draft. He was never projected as a top 20 pick because of the football issue.
  23. How are they anything alike other than getting big signing bonuses? Brownlie was coming off of injuries that he never really bounced back from.
