According to Dan Bernstein, his Cubs source tells him that team management really wants Silva to make the rotation. Another part of the equation is that they are worried they will burn out the back end of their bullpen (Marmol, Marshall, and Wood), so they would like to have Cashner in the bullpen to lessen their workload. I have no idea how reliable this "source" is, but I judge it as credible simply because it would be the typical Cub thing to do... valuing a 6th/7th inning bullpen guy over the development of a potential top of the rotation starting pitcher. -

So what was the story on Cashner today? Was it a serious blow to his chances at making the rotation? I have my doubts that he can consistently make it through 5+ innings, but I'm not sure there are any better options. -

That seems like a bit of an overreaction. He was a jerk before he got to Illinois and, by all accounts, nothing has changed since then. I don't think they will kick him off the team, but I do think he will seriously consider transferring due to perceived unfair treatment by the coaching staff.

I don't know that I like our chances, but I'm definitely thankful and amazed that Illinois is within 4. If a few 3's start going down, they might be able to make this game interesting.

It also gives the Cubs one less pinch-hitter on most days. It doesn't happen very often, but seeing Koyie Hill in a 12th inning pinch-hit opportunity just makes me cringe.

I don't know why, but it always seems like Thursday has more upsets and better games.

I will be surprised if Richmond is on the team at all next year. Not because of this issue specifically, but multiple issues throughout the year. I hope I am wrong, but I expect him to transfer.

For anyone who didn't see it, Silva's complete line today was: 3 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO That brings his spring ERA to 15.88 So what do the Cubs do now? I imagine any trade possibility is off the table and there is no way he can make the big league team. It is time for either an outright release or a fake injury.
