  1. Hollandsworth is ok as a studio guy, but was definitely missing something when he filled in for Bob during the season. As for Otto, I think I would go insane listening to him describe everything as TREEmendous. Plesac is a complete goof, but not a bad analyst. I have to believe that Moreland would be the front runner, but I honestly wouldn't mind seeing Grace in the booth. His funny stories may get stale and repetitive over the course of an entire season, but I have found him entertaining in the few Arizona broadcasts that I've seen over the past few years.
  2. I just saw the headline on ESPN that Colvin is out for the rest of the season after being impaled with a splintered bat. http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=5592592 It sounds like he is going to be ok, but eventually someone is going to suffer a worse fate if MLB doesn't do something about these maple bats.
  3. I haven't been following very closely for obvious reasons, but every time I turn a Cubs game on lately it seems that Barney is playing SS. I know that Castro was benched for a couple days because of his baserunning mistake, but what is the deal now? Do the Cubs think he is worn down after playing a near-full MLB season?
  4. Not funny. I expected much better from The Onion.
  5. This is not very well researched and may be widely shot down, but is Tyler Colvin just a left-handed version of Soriano? Colvin: .255, 19 HR, 48 RBI, 4-5 SB, 302 AB, 88 K, .827 OPS Soriano: .261, 20 HR, 65 RBI, 5-6 SB, 394 AB, 100 K, .830 OPS I do like Colvin, but I'm not sure there is a place for both of these guys in the same lineup, especially right next to each other in the order. They will hit their share of home runs, but also make an awful lot of unproductive outs. I'm not opposed to the idea of Colvin taking grounders at 1B so that he can become a more well-rounded super-sub, but I have a hard time envisioning long-term success with him and Soriano hitting 5-6 or 6-7 in the lineup.
  6. I don't want to see Soriano anywhere near the infield. why? He was terrible at 2B and will be terrible at 1B. His defense in LF is certainly not good, but he has been better this year than he was in the past. With Soriano at 1B, Ramirez and Castro may combine for 50+ errors.
  7. I don't want to see Soriano anywhere near the infield.
  8. He was just optioned to Iowa on 8/13. Doesn't he have to remain in Iowa for 10 days with the exception of an injury?
  9. So who takes Lee's place on the Cubs? Hoffpauir can't be recalled yet, right? Maybe an outfielder like Fuld with Nady becoming the temporary full-time first baseman? I know it really doesn't matter, but I'm taking a trip to Iowa this weekend so I'm curious who I will or won't see there.
  10. True, but his past moves don't look great for his future either... and yet he is still here.
  11. With the contracts on this team, there is only so much "rebuilding" that can take place. I'm fine with more of a "slow disassembly" of bad contracts over the next few seasons.
  12. Once again, I understand that it is not binding, but I would say that it is uncommon for a GM to commit to someone beyond the current season and then go another direction. I'm not saying that it can't happen, but the comments that I've read and the opinions of beat reporters and other media members close to the team all indicate that Hendry will be back in 2011. I hope I'm wrong, but all signs still point to a Hendry return. I don't know what a GM committing to somebody has to do with this, but it's not at all uncommon for owners to pay lip service to the future employment of a front office member and then actually making a change when that season ends. Oops, I meant to say an owner committing. I can see where that would have been confusing!

  14. I'm thinking media members, not fans. And it's not so much being upset about firing Hendry, but more finding out why he gave the vote of confidence and then fired him. This happens virtually every year across every sport, and you never hear a peep about it from the media. Nobody cares Maybe not. Can you think of or find an example for local or national media has criticized a team for firing a manager or GM for putting together or running a bad team after giving them a vote of confidence earlier in the season? But can you think of an example where the vote of confidence was a verbal commitment to the employee for the next season? What Ricketts said is completely different than saying "I have no intention of firing Jim Hendry" or "Jim Hendry's job is safe." Both of those are present tense and subject to change. He said that Hendry would be the GM going into next season.
  15. Ricketts said that Hendry would be the GM "going into next year." I think you were reading my statement too literally. Of course we know that Ricketts has the power to make a change at any time, but would he even consider such a thing after verbally committing to Hendry for next season? That is a little different than the standard vote of confidence.
  16. On a related note, please bring back "Jump" when the Cubs take the field. I'm sure it is just because I grew up watching all the games throughout the 80's and 90's, but no other song has the same connection to the Cubs. At least put it in the rotation along with the Tom Petty, U2, and Bon Jovi songs that they play currently.
  17. Is it too late for Ricketts to renege on his statement about Hendry after the season is over? I realize that the games don't mean anything now, but even independent of payroll this team is an complete embarassment. Bringing payroll into the equation, they are a disaster of epic proportions. It makes no sense whatsoever to allow the GM of a train wreck to hire the team's next manager.
  18. We probably should start saving now, because those tickets won't come cheap.
  19. Ok seriously Len, stop saying that Soriano's ball might have been a home run. You don't have to be a physics expert to tell that it was below the top of the fence and heading downward.
  20. What would their adjusted payroll be after all these moves? It seems the Yankees truly do have a limitless budget.
  21. Stay the course, Jim. We're still in this thing!
  22. I just saw both guys on MLB Network (not sure who they were) say they thought Lilly would stay with the Cubs. Nice job Jim.
  23. Only the Cubs can turn a valuable commodity with a very manageable contract (Lilly) into a virtual salary dump.
  24. Click for depression Noooooooooooooooooooooooo! Noooooooooooooooooooooooo! He dropped the ball!
