  1. I personally go back to 2002 where we didn't dump Alou to make room for Vlad. Same thing (as you say) in 2003 with Tejada and in 2004 with Beltran. They have done that sort of thing for years. The last time they bit their lip and signed the best and most predictably proficient FA on the mkt was Dawson in freakin' 87'. Recently could have had indisputable upgrades like Guerrero, Tejada, Hampton (he was really good back then but lost it at Coors), Thome, to name a few. EDIT: Instead ofthose guys, we get people like Kal Daniels, Danny Jackson, HRod, Dave Smith, Goose Gossage at age 42, Jacque, Luis Gonzalez (pre HR outburst; I won't speculate as to the cause), Blauser...the freakin list goes on and on. Danny Jackson - I think he managed to pitch only one 3 up, 3 down inning as a Cub.
  2. Expecting anything out of Prior and Wood beyond an extended stay on the DL qualifies as an "I told you so".
  3. What's the address? Went to the official Cubs site, used the Help/Contact Us link to navigate to a Help page, clicked Other. Saw an About the Game-Baseball Basics link-maybe Dusty could use Carlos' laptop during the game to study this page.
  4. But, he's (Pierre) such a hard worker, misquoted or not to him, Baseball will never be just a game.
  5. The mistakes are so glaringly obvious to everyone but the people in charge. One has to wonder if Hendry really does know anything about winning Baseball.
  6. I did too, I never imagined he'd be worse than Patterson was in the leadoff spot.
  7. Along the lines of Pierre working out: Since Hendry seems to apply the flavor of the year approach what if the WS winning team this year has a high OBP and low BB's? Will that finally get him to address these problems?
  8. Well, Hendry ignored Pierre's atrocious 2005 and now it's biting the Cubs in the behind. It's hard to ignore .276/.326/.354. And he had an even worse OPS in 2002 with the Rockies. Pierre was anything but a sure bet. On the plus side, he's actually been good on the base paths. The ironic point is the .276/.326/.354 line would look pretty good right about now, too bad Pierre not even going sniff such numbers this season.
  9. Don't know if it'll get a look but, I just Emailed the Cubs: To Jim Hendry and the whole of Cubs management: Your refusal to acknowledge and address the dual problems of low OBP and high issuance of BB is beyond Baseball stupid. I'm certain many of us have attempted the same perhaps, a steady stream of such will finally get through to Hendry and Company...
  10. Only the Cubs, Pierre lifetime .350 OBP to .270 OBP, I'm convinced that if Pujols became a Cub tomorrow he'd end up hitting .280. Name another team in Baseball which has 9 of every 10 trades implode in such a manner.
  11. The relevant question is how many walks will the Cubs issue and draw today? Maddux is going today so, I'm going with the Cubs issuing 6 walks today. Maddux 1 over 6+ and the bullpen 5 in 2+. As for drawing walks - 2, 1 for Walker and 1 for Murton.
  12. I'm still trying to figure out why someone like Hill with two pitches and absolutely no control was "untouchable" last offseason. Someday he may be an effective reliever, at the moment, he may more valuable to the Iowa Cubs than the Chicago Cubs.
  13. Do you really think we have a chance to score more than 4 runs today with our lineup? If anyone on the Cubs had an active brain cell they would note that Maddux, one of the greatest control ptichers of all time, has walked 3 men in 3 IP, and figure out it might be a good idea to take some pitches.
  14. Can someone please inform the Cub hitters that this Ump's strike zone is the size of Pierre' OBP? And, if they TAKE some pitches they'll get some baserunners - you know, what runs come from...
  15. Buerhle lives and dies on the corners and low in the strike zone as well, if he's forced to get his pitches up, he's little more than a BP pitcher. That's presuming the Cubs take pitches. Highly doubtful. Well, a professional MLB team would take advantage of this situation of course, we know the Cubs are far from such a team.
  16. Buerhle lives and dies on the corners and low in the strike zone as well, if he's forced to get his pitches up, he's little more than a BP pitcher.
  17. Pierre was at his pathetic worst We can piss and moan all we want about Hendry picking him up, and it clearly wasn't a good move, but no one could've predicted he'd be this bad during a contract year. IMO he had the potential to be this bad as well as hitting 290. I didn't like the trade as well but, I thought at the very least, it would be an improvement over what they had last year. Never did I believe Pierre would be worse than Patterson.
  18. Nationals' catcher probably told Neifi there was only one out therefore, he thought he was moving the tying run into scoring position. There is a team that play would have worked on but, the Cubs can't play themselves.
  19. Was the notice composed with a word processor such as Word? If so, someone should alert him to the spell checker.
  20. All you need know about Baker and whether or not the players are held to any sort of a standard can be summed up by this - prior to yesterday's game, Pierre and Perez were dancing in the dugout.
  21. I can deal with the Cubs getting beat because the opponent is better but, I cannot accept pitchers failing to cover first base, runners getting doubled-off the bases on fly balls, outfielders missing the cut-off man - that is directly attributable to Dusty. Its obivious he doesn't stress fundamental play nor does he hold anyone accountable for the repeated mentals errors - he never will. Baker has got go and be replaced by someone who's going hold a player accountable for not hustling or stupid mistakes.
  22. And perhaps the pitching coach has something to do with that. maybe. they seem to like to nibble the edges a lot. I agree, how many times have we seen Prior get ahead 0-2 only to run the count full. Giving 8 and 9 runs to these lineups is pathetic, beyond the Cubs, the Padres and Giants have two of the poorest lineups in the NL. Combined they have two quality hitters - Giles and Bonds - two more than the Cubs of course.
  23. Too bad our #2 hitter can't accidentally walk in front of a speeding cement mixer after the game. Neifi's the equivalent of a pair of cheap sun glasses.
  24. Someone' got to replace Jones as the K-machine.
  25. Going back to the last series- how many consecutive at-bats has Roberts reached base? When did he all of sudden learn how to hit?
