I have been clued into the fact that CLTV is reporting the Cubs are feverishly trying to stamp out a 3way trade including Todd Walker, Kerry Wood, and minor league pitching for Kevin Mench and Barry Zito. Both Kerry and Walker would be sent to Texas, with prospects from both Texas and Chicago headed to Oakland. Note I am not saying this is a done deal, I'm saying it's obviously in the works. That sounds like CLTV repeating the Rogers thing from the other day.

From what I heard, CLTV's source was someone on Chicago radio so I can't provide you a web link.

Here is the info for the Cubs entering on Burnett, also word is on the street also that the Cardinals have Burnett signed if they'll offer the 5th year. Cubs are rumored to just have switched their 5/50 from Furcal to Burnett.

Edit:

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs could make a serious run at A.J. Burnett after losing out on Rafael Furcal.

Well, he's probably a better hitter than Neifi Perez, but can he really play shortstop? The Cardinals and Blue Jays appear to be the top suitors for Burnett at the moment, though the Mets, Nationals, Rangers and Mariners could also be in the running.

Cubs not in on AJB

A report earlier in the day that the Chicago Cubs had entered the Burnett bidding, having lost out to the Dodgers in an effort to land free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal of the Braves, apparently wasn't true. The Cubs haven't held discussions with Braunecker for nearly two weeks and a source in Seattle said last night that the Mariners have dropped well back in the Burnett sweepstakes.

That leaves the Cards and Jays battling it out.

I hope that's not true (the Texas/Oakland trade).

Seconded, I know, Wood on the DL at some point of 2006 is a certainty but, when healthy there's no denying he's one the best pitchers in Baseball. As selfish as it sounds, I'd rather see him on the DL for the Cubs than go on to Texas and have a healthy season.

Mench is not a big enough difference maker, and not the type of player that three or four papers are reporting that they'll go after this week. (I.E. left handed)

Thanks for the link on us not pursuing Burnett, everything I've read until that said we were interested. Maybe we're too late to the party, but..L.A. got Furcal...why are things always different for us?

Here's something to cheer you all up that I created in 30 seconds.

Jim, is that you?

Umm....no. And don't sit in that basket full of eggs over there, either.

We're the Cubs.

Opening day lineup:

LF Mabry - CF Wilson - RF Jones - 3B Macias - SS Perez - 2B Hairston - 1B Lee - C Blanco

Ramirez is hurt and Blanco needs to catch opening day starter Zambrano.

Zito to Dodgers for Bradley?

Dec 5 - The Athletics and Dodgers are talking about a potential trade that would send left-handed starter Barry Zito from Oakland to Los Angeles for outfielder Milton Bradley, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. Officials from both teams are expected to meet Monday at the winter meetings in Dallas.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Rangers are focusing on Zito and have called the A's. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Rangers are offering outfielder Kevin Mench so far.

Other teams believed to be suitors for the former Cy Young winner are the Mets, Diamondbacks, Phillies and Blue Jays.

I thought Zito would land more.

I think he would if he weren't a FA after the season.

Don't the Cubs save quite a bit of money here?? This deal should please many.

Saving money isn't an issue now. The Cubs have money to spend, but don't appear focused on spending it very wisely. Weakening the team to clear a little space in payroll isn't going to help when that space isn't used to increase production elsewhere.

...I really thought we had a good chance at Bradley. Weh ave nothing like Zito to send their way. Out of curiosity, how much money does LA have to play with? Isn't Zito going to make more than 6M this season? Furcal is going to make 13M. So basically they are adding 19M and subtracting 3M? Are my numbers way off?

Here's more information about the deal here.

I guess prospects would also be involved for the A's.

A Buster Olney blub about the possible trade here.

Tony Jackson writes that the Dodgers and Athletics are talking about a deal that would include at least these elements: center fielder Milton Bradley and left-hander Barry Zito. You'd have to figure that the Dodgers would have to part with at least two of their top prospects, such as Chad Billingsley, as well.

Surely the Rangers are offering a boatload of prospects along with Mench otherwise Billy Beane probably ruptured a kidney from laughing so hard at John Daniels' initial offer.
