The convo was like this:

Aramis Fan: remember me from the nsbb q and a?

Len: I can only answer short questions at the moment

Aramis Fan: Are you 100% sure Furcal is coming to the Cubs?

Len: Yes, Jim Hendry told me

Aramis Fan: when will he be signed?

Len: I'm busy at the moment

Read that aloud.

That might not have been exactly how it went

Seriously. No sane human being would say something like that and then not add anything to it. It's akin to me working for Comcast and having this conversation:

Person: Hey what's up?

Me: Hi

Person: So what are the chances that Comcast buys the NFL?

Me: It's a done deal already

Person: Really, when does it become official?

Me: Bye

I'm starting to wonder if you didn't talk to a web-bot.

Is it really that big of a deal? The dude posted bum information and aplogized. Drop it already.

Actually, when someone makes a bogus claim and uses a Cubs personell (sp?) as his source, it is a big deal.

If I claimed to have a conversation with Gerry Hughes and I claim that he told me the Cubs are about to sign Burnett for 5/55 and then it is proved false, I'd expect to be ripped.

First of all, it lowers the integrity of this board. Secondly it may cause some casual readers to question the integrity of the person claimed as a source.

Third, it's fair game to rip Bruce Levine, Peter Gammons, or any other person who tries to get the "scoop." I think the same should happen here. If I claim to have an "inside" scoop and I'm proven false, I expect the same level of critique.

The fact remains, the report left no room for doubt. "100%" was how it was reported. Had he said "likely", "leaning toward", or something that left room for change then I'd probably drop it a lot sooner.

Once again, he was given bum information and then apologized for it. In the grand scheme of life, it really is not that big of a deal. He learned his lesson, let's move on. This is a message board, not the United Nations.

Exactly, so we're free to opine about the occurances here.

Honestly Vance, why would you believe a rumor like that anyway? No one was hurt. The last thing you didn't mention is, Len was wrong or even Hendry was wrong.

what a surprise -- the people that posted the BS want to drop it.

it's not that big of a deal, but it does lower the credibility of the site when people are all 'OMG len casper tolded me that the cubs signed raphael furcal!'

i, for one, think you're full of crap. even if you did have that conversation, common sense would tell you (as it told most of everyone else) that it was not really len. and since you're so insistent that it was len, it seems to me that you're full of it.

You were wrong. Len (Or the person posing as Len) was wrong. So what? It's not like anyone's life is on the line. I don't see any reason to smoke anyone's testicles because they made a bad report.

I gotta go with ABuck and Vance on this one. I was offended, mainly b/c of the strong insistence that it was Len and the comment that he was "100%" sure that Furcal would be a Cub. Had he said, it "looks really good", I'd say what the hell. But I smell a rat here...

I was just IM'ng with Rubby Perez. He said that his brother Neifi said Furcal was indeed coming here but got really ticked off when he was surfing the net that the Cubs would leak the announcement to their broadcaster and even more upset that the broadcaster would tell it to two random kids who'd post it on a message board that he didn't want to be a part of such a Mickey Mouse organization that he decided to take the Dodger's money. So, I'm sorry. It looks like Len and you guys were right...but your lack of discretion cost the Cubs Furcal.

Can't tell whether you are kidding or not, Vance.

I'll see if I can get Rubby to come on and confirm. He said he might if he gets back online.
