Well, the deal isn't sealed yet, but I am one happy camper right now.

50M/5, or thereabouts, was ridiculous. Thank God someone saved Hendry from himself. Furcal was a second tier player who showed little improvement, but a lot of consistency. What he would have given us was not worth 10M/year.

Cedeno time, baby! Chah-Ching!!

I'm a little upset that this may sour Hendry going after Bradley, but keeping the 5 year monstrosity off the payroll still has me grinning. :D

I can't see this actually stopping Hendry from dealing with LA. It's not like the Dodgers did anything unsavory (stupid maybe, but nothing that wasn't within what typically happens). I think that, if anything, this increases the liklihood that we deal with the Dodgers as they have yet another large contract on their books and might want to move some of that $.

Mr. Bradley, your table is ready.

just like to point out that its been nearly 40 minutes since the LA Times reported it was a done deal, and NO other outlets have reported this. None. Just like to point that out...

Buckle up.........we may be in store for a rough off-season.

Gut feeling: Not getting Furcal becomes a blessing in disguise.

Nevermind the fact that I'm happy with Furcal for a few pitching prospects (plus the Dodgers eating money) at midseason when they realize they signed an $8 mil per year player for $13

What's Nomar number again?

1-800-STEROIDS

He was having problems well before a testing program was put in place, I think that's a ridiculous assessment.

some "baseball toaster" site is reporting it now, but it is siting the times as its source, so really, still only one media source.

I agree that this is a blessing in disguise. Every shiny FA looks good, but a whole lot of 'em end up being payroll albatrosses.

Play Cedeno.

Amazingly, I'm not the slightest bit phased by this news.

Neither am I. I've wanted Cedeno to be SS since the offseason began. I don't think Furcal was worth $10M per year -- let alone $13M.

I agree to a point here - I don't want Furcal at $10m+ - but I wouldn't mind seeing Nomar re-signed for a year. If that isn't happening, I'm all for starting Cedeno at SS. The problem with that plan is that I can't imagine Dusty actually doing it, especially with another rookie (Murton) starting.

A fair point, but Cedeno is simply better than Perez. Playing a lesser player is grounds for firing, in my book. And you shouldn't have to craft a roster so as to prevent the bizarre use of players like Hollandsworth and (potentially) Perez. In the theoretical world where the choices are Cedeno and Perez for SS, Hendry needs to make it clear that Cedeno is the guy. Not Perez.

If Dusty doesn't and plays Perez instead, he needs to be let go.

Wouldn't surprise me if you are right. A cheap an effective Cedeno for the next few years could be huge as far as the budget is concerned.

However this thin free agent market doesn't really offer any other attractive opportunities for improvement. Money to spend, but not much to buy.

He's expected to undergo a physical tomorrow and the deal could be announced on Monday. It's a great contract for Furcal, who will likely be able to get the Cubs to overpay for him in his declining years three years from now at age 31.

Fixed that one for you.

Playing a lesser player should be grounds for firing, but Dusty did it all last year. There is not much reason to expect anything has changed.

I agree completely - if Cedeno and Neifi are the two SS we carry, Cedeno better be the starter. If he isn't, Dusty isn't using an optimal lineup (what else is new?), which should certainly be grounds for firing - not that Dusty hasn't deserved to be fired for years now.

Do we really need speed? No, we don't. Especially at what Pierre is going to cost us (money and prospects). By missing out on Castillo, the best answer for leadoff is now Walker. That holds for almost any trade scenario at this point.

SP + Wilkerson + Bradley = better team next year

I shudder to think what will actually happen though.

Well, I can see Henry getting into the Burnett deal now that he has all this free money laying around. Anyone for Burnett for $55 million?? :puke:
