I forgot to ask, is that offer in Canadian dollars? ;)

That is a lot of looneys and twoneys the Jays are spending!

IMO Toronto is one of the most beautiful cities in America.

Seconded.

And Giles will think so double as much if that ludicrous 5/55 offer is true.

I still don't understand why Ryan received the contract he did.....He was only a closer for ONE season- that just doesn't make him reliable material. It'd be a different story if he was coming off his 3rd or more year of putting up those numbers, but closer's come and go all the time.

Just makes me more pleased we've got Dempster and didn't have to enter that ridiculous bidding war for Ryan or Wagner....

I think what the Jays intend to do is front-load the deal like Ryan's. Maybe they'll pay 18-20M this year or something, then pay the rest at 9M per or something. I'd have no problem paying Giles 11M a year, but 5 years of it? That's just crazy. There's no real way to rationalize this, it's just too much.

I think that's very unlikely. I can't think of an instance where a contract is front-loaded.

This is getting crazy. First they offer 5/55, then they move to America! Stop the insanity. :P

There is no guarantee of playing for a winner in the AL East, unless you are on Boston or NYY.

Toronto is not just the other side of the country, it's in another country.

What kind of endorsement deals would Giles miss out on playing in such a small tv market?

This contract is really not different than what seems to be getting offered, just a few extra years tacked on. It is a big deal (the extra years, I mean), but I don't see it being enough to make Giles want to go there.

Is Canada in North America? Last time I looked it was.

He's been putting up great numbers for 3 years in a row actually. The save is the most overrated aspect of his game. He's a great reliever, whether it's in the 7th, 8th or 9th. He went from set-up man to closer flawlessly, so you can't question his ability to handle the job. He's far more reliable than Dempster, and much more dominant. $10m a year for him is not at all surprising, and he got a bit less. The years are odd, but hardly a certain bust.

Giles at 5/55 is too much.

How many endorsements did Giles have in SD?

Of all the places other than the Cubs he could play, Toronto suits me just fine.

Riccardi also has a lot of money to play with. Ownership there gave him a three-year budget last year rather than a year-to-year budget. The announcement came after most of the premiere FA had signed, so Riccardi din't add to last year's payroll knowing he'd have lots of cash to spend over the next two years. It looks like he's planning on doing it too.

If Giles signs for 5/55, I really can't fault Hendry for passing on him.

Locally, in SD, he got quite a few. Akinori Otsuka does a Corky's Pest Control commercial, for cryin' out loud.

I agree with you in regards to Ryan - he's ahd quality #'s the last 3 years. However, it has been shown time and time again that regardless of the success a pitcher has had in the 7th and 8th innings, the transition to closer can be a whole different realm. Granted, Ryan definitely had success this year as a closer, but no moreso than Dempster did. AND, at this point in the game, both Dempster and Ryan have only been closing games for one season - compare their #'s. And one year as a closer shouldn't bring that kinda money. I also don't think the save is the most overrated aspect of the game either. If that 9th inning pitcher can't come in and hold the lead at the biggest pressure point in the game, those previous 8 innings are worthless. I think the only overrated aspect in regards to a closer is the amount of $ they bring.
