I am going to stand in and defend ND because adam was so cordial on the Lou Holtz post. If ND makes the BCS it isnt their fault and what do you expect them to do turn it down. What is wrong is the system. It would easily be corrected with a 16 team playoff like every other division has

I agree, there's no reason ND should decline their invite. They've had a great season and it's not like they aren't deserving. Even if they did decline, it wouldn't help bring change.

The Heisman Presentation is before the bowl games still, right? Any ideas on who will be invited. IMO Bush, Leinart, Young, and Quinn will all be there, but who will be the fifth? Maurice Drew? Does Robinson have a chance, I am not too sure what kind of numbers he has, but he did lead PSU through a damn good season? I think any chance Vick had left with Miami. Maybe Hawk or Olsen? ESPN will not load for some reason so I can't check their Heisman watch.

Of course they shouldn't turn down the invite. That's not fair to the players or the fans.

But I really hate the repeated "Don't hate the playa, hate the game" attitude about what's broken in the BCS

I'm hoping that ND being invited fuels the fire for a playoff. How could this not anger the Presidents of schools like Oregon, UCLA and Auburn unless they are being bought off?

The only way for the fans to fix the problem is not to watch or go to games that we feel teams are being sent undeservedly. Since ND fans are not going to boycott and other people who love college football are going to watch, this isnt going to happen.

I have mentioned this other places though. The current system is great for the fans because it gives us something to debate about besides who should be the MVP or who should win the Heisman. Yes it is probably unfair to Oregon and California and non big conference teams. Also like last year a team like Auburn could claim to be National Champion because they were not fairly eliminated. So this system does have its positives. Also a team like Oregon does have a remidy for fixing the situation. Win your conference. Yes the system is unfair to Oregon but its not like they didnt have a chance at all like someone like Fresno St.

Right now, ESPN has Jerome Harrison from Wazzu listed as 5th.

But that is total crap. I can't believe Drew Olson is not in the 5 spot there at least.

[rant]And while we're on the subject, Brady has over 300 more yards, plenty more TDs, and the same amount of INTs, and while Leinart has the ND "drive" to help him out, Quinn outplayed Leinart in that game, and he also led the MSU comeback (albeit in a loss) and the Stanford comeback, whereas Leinart has had comparatively smooth sailing for most of the year, and in the games that have been close, it's been the Reggie Bush Show. So why is it that not one voter on ESPN's Heisman thing has Brady ahead of Leinart? I can understand having him behind Leinart overall but not one person rates him better?[/rant]

Quinn has 50+ more attempts than Leinart. Leinart has orchestrated comebacks against Fresno St., Arizona St., and to a lesser extent Oregon. Not arguing one way for either, just counter points to the ones in your argument.

And USC is undefeated, ND has 2 losses. Were ND undefeated Quinn may be closer to, if not in, the top spot.

I just found this feature on the Heisman watch that I never knew was there. In comparing Young, Quinn, Leinart, and Robinson they look pretty close. Quinn has far more TD's but it doesn't show rushing TDs, giving Young and Robinson a disadvantage.

Colorado playing in a conference championship game is a joke. That team flat out sucked on national television against nebraska. Cant be too many people excited to watch this game.

SEC championship. Now that looks like a championship.

I'm excited about the Big 12 Championship but for another reason, not Colorado. Plus I will be at the game in Houston. Hopefully Vince Young will put on a show for his homecoming.

this was posted at NDNation, and I found it to be interesting

The BCS is actually closer to getting the top 8 teams in this year than they have ever been. The Big East, ACC, Big Ten, and Big 12 have all gotten "undeserving" teams into the BCS.

2005: #11 West Virginia instead of #7 Oregon

2004: #13 Michigan & #25 Pitt instead of #5 Cal and #7 Georgia

2003: #9 Miami & #10 Kansas State instead of #6 Texas and #8 Tennessee

2002: #15 Florida State instead of #8 Kansas State*

2001-LSU #13

2000-Purdue #14

1999-Stanford #22

1998- Syracuse- #15

*Note: ND was ranked #9 in the BCS in 2002 and didn't go.

All these teams won the conference and as a result bumped out (what some would call) more deserving teams who didn't win a conference. I really do understand everyone's complaint with ND going, but does anyone have a real problem with the conference winners getting automatic bids? I think this was mentioned before, but should the top 8 (10 next year) get in, no matter what happened in conferences. If FSU or Colorado gets in will some people look at those teams as stealing Oregon/OSU's spot? I am not trying to start this all up again, I just wondered what some peoples opinion on the automatic conference bid was. With ND not being in a conference I can see an argument against the conference champ going, but wondered the thoughts of some Big 10, Pac 10, etc, fans were.

This is the link that was given.

I think the auto-bids for conferences is fine, though it's unfair that 1/2 the conferences have title games and the other 1/2 don't. In other words, Penn State has no chance of losing their spot to, say, Northwestern in a Big Ten title game. Same goes for WVa and USC. the counter argument, of course, is that if Texas and Va Tech are as good as we think, there is no worry of them getting upset.

PS - I updated the Bowl comittments on the firsr post of this thread

LenDale White, who was carted off a USC practice field on Sunday with a shoulder injury was cleared to play against UCLA (with a bruised shoulder).

UCLA's center, Mike McCloskey and best run-stopping LB Justin London - both of whom had missed both Arizona games - have returned from injury and will play against USC.

The heart of all NCAA post season tournaments has been automatic berths for conference champions. this is another reason why they should go to a 16 team tournament so teams that win the non-major conferences would get representation into the tournament.

The BCS also does not want to alienate a conference like the Big Ten by not taking Michigan last year. One reason is Michigan did show very favorably in the Rose Bowl. Also the last thing the BCS wants is for a major conference to leave and have a situation like 97 and 94 when there was 2 undeated teams with no chance to play each other. So it may not seem fair but the BCS will never not take a winner of a major conference.

One last thing in a case like Michigan last year is that the Big Ten actually did well in Bowl games. In preception the conference was down but in reality it was pretty good. Part of the conferences preception being down would go into a team like Michigans ranking. So the last thing I would want to do is not take a team like W. Virginia that may have a poor preception but may actually be really good team. In reality W. Virginia may be a top 10 team. We really dont know.

USC is still favored by 2 or 3 touchdowns though, right?

change of subject.

For big Ten fans. I really am glad that we do not have a conference championship game. What I am wondering is do you wish the Big Ten conference games would start a week later so the final games would go until Thanksgiving weekend. I love big Ten football and really love college football as a whole, but without any Big Ten games the last couple of weeks I dont get as excited about the games. If they started the conference season a week later it would allow the teams to either start their season a week later or have a bye week in the pre-season. I personnally would like this I was just wondering if other Big Ten fans thought the same way.

we choked plain and simple.

Flames, watching the highlights I'm not sure you choked as much as they won it...that was a beautiful pass by Akron's QB with 10 seconds left.

Gotta feel for you though, that didn't look like a fun way to lose.

prevent defense the ENTIRE 4th quarter. I say we need a new D-coordinator immediately. Unbelievable, Wolfe had another spectacular game, we had a 14 point lead and we still lose. I can't believe we aren't going to a bowl game.

The Brady Quinn to the NFL talk has begun. I really hope he stays.

Brady has already made quite clear that he intends to come back next season. I really don't see a reason for him to leave. Why leave now in such a talented draft class, when you can wait and become an absolute lock to be a top-3 pick next season, not to mention a possible national champion and Heisman Trophy winner?

He has said that, but did you read the article?

It's something I may look at after the bowl game. But right now, I'm just worried about getting ready for the bowl game.

I hope he isn't having second thoughts. I think Charlie may have addressed it today in his presser, but I haven't read it yet. I doubt he would leave, and he has said many times he won't, but money does talk...

Do I want to be a millionaire this year, or next year? :?

If Quinn feels he's NFL ready, I don't think he should put off for a year to try to get a better spot in a weaker class. There's been too many players that have great Junior years and poor senior years. But, if the chance to compete for the National Title and/or Heisman is worth risking that payday to him, then it's not a bad decision at all to stay.
