I think we can change the title of this thread to "confirmed". Levine says its done.

And Levine says both the Sox and Cubs will be in the hunt for Pierre.

Great! So the Cubs won't get into a bidding War for Giles but will for Pierre?

Unconcievable! (no reference to the Princes Bride intended)

Decent deal for the Phillies, IMO. Rowand's bound to rebound hitting in Philly, with a decent lineup around him. And they can afford it as they will likely get Thome-like production out of Ryan Howard for next to nothing. They now have a good core of Howard, Utley, Burrell and Rowand.

I think it's good for Philly too, but I wouldn't consider their Howard production as being cheap. They are basically paying him what they are paying the WS for Thome. It kind of eliminates much of the benefit of pre-arbitration production.

Damn shame, I always liked Jim.

Even as a Cub fan I tip my hat to this organization. Instead of sitting on their WS loot, it goes right back into the team. Thome did always want to play in Chicago, you know.

Don't. Reinsdorf made money hand over fist and will invest very little of it back into the team. He's just about a big of a scumbag as you'll find in MLB ownership, and considering his peers, that's really saying something.

Truth.

That's pretty much what I meant. Basically, they are paying Thome the money that Howard may very well deserve by the numbers he puts up.

EDIT: Hagworth and Gonzales are the two picthers.

That makes the trade a bit more reasonable for the Phillies, considering they'll be paying half of Thome's salary. Gio Gonzales is one of their top pitching prospects, and Haigwood is a quality prospect too.

Okay, I just took the next to nothing comment as meaning something else. After all is said and done, they didn't get rid of a contract, just part of it, and they're still in need of some serious upgrades that will cost them elsewhere.

Wow. Kinda surprised they let Rowand go, but they did need a DH, and it is a safeguard against Konerko moving (albeit a crappy one).

Now let's get Abreu and Pierre and Furcal.

Has there been any steroid suspicion surrounding Thome? It seemed to be popular to go down that road when a big slugger sustained an injury last season. Was there any talk that Thome's injuries were related to steroid use?
Posted

I for one have never heard any mention of steroids in the case of Jim Thome.I

I remember reading on mulitple occasions how his career numbers have been lost some notoriety due to the '"assumed" steroid enhanced numbers of several of his contemporaries.

How one goes about clearing him and not others.......is a topic for another thread.

I bet Williams next move is to go hard after Pierre.

I don't. They have Podsenick and Dye currently in the OF, then they have Chris Young, Brian Anderson, and Tom Collaro currently in their system. Having Podsenick all but gurantees the White Sox prolly not going hard after Pierre. Not to mention Brian Anderson is a personal favorite of KWilliams. Unless it was a deal that blows KWilliams mind away...I don't see the Sox going after Pierre.

TERRIBLE move by the Sox.

Better off using the money to give to Paulie. Oh well, the WS will be played in Chicago next year, but not on the South Side.

...actually they have enough money for Konerko and Thome, since Frank and Carl are gone.

As a Sox fan I love the move. Gonzalez is great, but his ETA was, imo, 2008 at least. Haigwood was nice, but the fact the Phils are paying half the deal, and we kept McCarthy AND Young, I think it was a solid deal.

I think the Sox mantra was pitching, defense and speed?

None of wich you get from a DH, so what's your point?

Spending money on a power hitter is less money they can spend on pitching, defense and speed

Edit: Also getting rid of Rowand kinda gets rid of that whole Gold Glove caliber CF doesnt it?

Jim Thome - 1B - Phillies

The Phillies will get Aaron Rowand and two prospects for Jim Thome, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. They're expected to pay slightly more than half the $46 million the first baseman is still owed.

Radio reports indicates the two prospects are pitchers Daniel Haigwood and Gio Gonzalez, which makes an already shaky trade a potential terrible one. Both Haigwood and Gonzalez are among the White Sox's top 10 prospects. Thome has agreed to waive his no-trade clause to join the White Sox. The deal is contingent on Thome passing a physical Friday in Chicago. Nov. 23 - 4:50 pm et

Yep. Terrible. And I agree, just Rowand was shaky consider he is a year removed from a .900 OPS season, and Thome is old and DL-prone.

Is this a contingency plan for Konerko? The way I see it, they NEED Konerko back more than ever. I would say its a major (plus?) if Thome plays more than 100 games.

They have:

Pods

Anderson

Dye

Crede

Uribe

Iguchi

Thome

AJP?

They need some thunder.

I can almost guarantee Rowand never posts that again. All around decent defender, not a very good hitter. Considering the surplus of CF's in the organization (Anderson, Young) this deal is fine by me.

Not even in a great hitter's park, surrounded by Utley, Howard, Abreu and Burrell (albeit probably behind all 5 at this point)?

I really don't think so. Something about his swing just bothered me when he was here. Little power for a guy who has no speed, no patience, and no other offensive asset bothered me. He was replacable, because of Anderson and the vast amount of CF's available in trade. If I was Williams, I'd get Milton Bradley for next to nothing, but too many fans buy into the chemistry.

Numbers I heard: Phillies pick up $25M, Sox pick up $21M.
