A baseball official familiar with the Yankees' plans said they recently reached out to the Oakland A's to ask about the availability of center fielder Mark Kotsay. The official said the A's aren't opposed to moving Kotsay, but that talks stalled when Oakland asked about second baseman Robinson Cano and pitcher Chien-Ming Wang -- the two players everybody keeps asking the Yankees about.

I find Kotsay to be quite over-rated. I'd rather trade for Zito.

Wasn't Kotsay supposedly available this past offseason, then signed to an extension?

Has something changed since then, or is it just a NY rag trying to make something out of nothing?

The 2 players beane asked about, could we not offer them walker and j williams.

I'm not sure what else the Yanks have to offer in young inexpensive value.

My thoughts exactly, what exactly were they expecting Oakland to want in return? Tony Womack?

i'm interested diffusion why it would be so stupid?, if we lose out on furcal we will require a leadoff hitter and also CF. Would we be offering too much?.

Yes, because I think we'd be overpaying big time.

Mark Kotsay is an extremely good defensive centre fielder, and a decent hitter for his position. He'll turn thirty in December though, and I think the contract extension that Beane signed him too this year was a bit expensive, at $7.05m in 2006, $7m in 2007 and $8m in 2008, or $22.05m over the next 3 years. He's worth nearer $15-18m. Kotsay also has a full no-trade clause up until the 2007 season, and a limited no-trade clause after that. That's obviously problematic in terms of acquiring him, and problematic if we want to move him at a later date.

If Kotsay's actually available and willing to move, which is highly debatable, he's probably the best available CF out there besides Milton Bradley, and he of course comes without all the Bradley baggage. All the same, the Cubs shouldn't be sending two above average major league players that are underpaid relative to their production for one that's above average but overpaid, and older (than Williams at least).

Also, I don't think that Beane would be particularly interested in Walker, given that he has the very brilliant but nobody knows it (expect those that need to know it) Mark Ellis at second base. I don't think Beane would be particularly interested in Robinson Cano for that matter either. That leads me to suggest that he didn't seriously consider the Yankee's interest, just said whatever he needed to say to get them to back off, and isn't that open to trading Kotsay, or at least isn't open to appearing to be open to trading Kotsay, if you see what I mean.

The sooner people stop looking at Bradley the better. I understand how valuable he would be but under Hendry he will never be a cub. When Corey is hacking it up next year i think Kotsay will look very attractive.

We will not get Kotsay while Dusty is here. He's too white. He won't handle all of the day games as well as a black player.

Looks like Dusty is not the only one showing thier true colors...

I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, but what I said came straight from Dusty's mouth.

Don't worry. The longer you're here the more you'll get used to the regular use of Dustyisms by a majority of posters. I'll give you a quick rundown of standard Dusty references:

anything about black vs. white players and playing in the heat

anything about catching fish, especially striped bass

anything about a player being his "girlfriend"

There are several others, but I gotta go. Someone else will fill in the rest.

I think everyone asks the Yankees about Wang and Cano because as far as young talent goes, that's it for the Yankees.

the funny thing is the yankees refusal to part with them. neither one of them is that great. it's kind of pathetic. i enjoy it.
