Not only did we give Eyre a 3/11 deal with a no-trade clause, but we just surrendered our second round pick in doing so.

this just keeps getting better and better.

Since you don't want to read the thread....it would be inaccurate to say all posters are disappointed with the Eyre signing, and/or the terms of the deal. In fact, some are quite pleased with the signing and the attention Hendry is giving to the bullpen. And at least one poster hopes he isn't finished with bullpen changes....

Well, I did read the majority of the thread, and I didn't say all posters were disappointed, I merely recaped the predominant school of thought. What other relievers are you wanting?

Vance, how do we know what type FA Eyre is? Have those been established? I haven't seen the list.

Scroll down.

What a joke these lists are.

Royce Clayton is a type A while Nomar is a type B.

Just for fun, lets look at what Royce Clayton and Nomar did just last year:

Clayton had more than twice as many at bats as Nomar, yet had a lower AVG, lower OBP, lower SLG, and lower OPS. Nomar wasn't that far behind him in XBH's in half the at bats.

Wilson Alvarez is Glendon Rusch in LA. Part time starter, part time long reliever. He's a Type A and Kevin Millwood and Jarrod Washburn are type B. Okay then.

I could go on, but now I'm even more frustrated that Nomar won't even land us a decent compensation pick.

What does the folly of the ranking system have to do with us not getting a decent compensation pick for Nomar?

Or did I misunderstand you and that's a separate complaint?

Why so much money? ugh...Remlinger pt. 2...

My sentiments exactly, this seems exactly like the Remlinger deal 3 years ago. Only Rem was a little older.

Well, if the Dodgers take him, it probably won't matter. I doubt the Dodgers fall in the bottom half of the first round.

My frustration is that Nomar isn't a type A. My other frustration is that we didn't just bring him back.

Zero chance that anybody signs Nomar before the arb deadline.

Zero chance that the Cubs offer him arb.

It doesn't matter if he's Type A, Type B, or Type Q.

Why is it frustrating? Why should it matter? A, B, C...the Cubs weren't going to offer Nomar arbitration anyway, so it's all a moot point.

If the Cubs offered Nomar arbitration he'd most likely jump on it in a heartbeat, and the Cubs certainly aren't going to risk arbitration and pay Nomar another $8MM or whatever he earned last season.

BA's already said that 2006 is shaping up to be a weak draft class, so as of right now I'm not too upset about losing a 2nd rounder. Cubs better nail their 1st rounder though.

If by the slightest chance some team felt desperate enough to sign him before the deadline, we could have received compensation.

Forgive me if this has already been discussed in this thread but did anyone else see this article in the Sun-Times?

Cubs' latest signing has an Eyre of durability

Interesting note:

Before Scott Eyre joined a teleconference with reporters Thursday to discuss his new deal with the Cubs, he turned away from the television in his hotel room.

Eyre, 33, explained that as someone with attention deficit disorder (ADD), he has trouble concentrating on two things at the same time when he's not taking his medication.

Eyre credits that discovery and his treatment with helping turn his career around. The Cubs are banking that career will continue to flourish as the free-agent left-hander agreed to a two-year deal with a player option for a third season.

Perhaps he is one who figured something out later in his career.

Given their track record, I wouldn't count on it.

I'm still hoping for a bonafide 8th inning setup man, via trade. Jesse Crain in Minnesota, Rafael Betancourt in Cleveland, Mike MacDougal in Kansas City. Free agents Bob Howry and Octavio Dotel are also possibilities. I prefer some of these guys to others (Betancourt please!), but I'd be happy about getting any of them. My hope is that for once, the Cubs go into spring training with a quality, deep, effective bullpen. It will help any team win a lot of games, but given the tendency of our starting pitchers to run up high pitch counts and exit games early, a great bullpen should be especially valuable for this team.

As evidence of the value of deep bullpens, I merely point to the White Sox, Astros, Indians and Angels last year. The Cardinals in 2004. Minnesota for most of the last half-dozen years. Most of these teams had average at best offenses (Cards excluded), but were still winning ballclubs. I don't think it's a coincidence that each had reliable middle relievers, a good 7th inning man, a good 8th inning man, and a good closer.

Won't the Cubs lose their pick, if they sign either Furcal or Giles?

Looks like he was signed because he is willing to go fishing with Dusty

About a week ago, Eyre checked in with Baker again.

"All he said is, 'Did you sign yet? We're going fishing,'" Eyre said. "I've got a nice fishing partner."

Not if the old system of protecting top 15 picks is still intact. Teams that finish in the bottom half will keep their 1st pick no matter what. If this was not the case, they would have already lost their pick for Eyre.

Don makes some good points in regard to the inability of Cub starters to go deep into games, and how teams like Anaheim and Houston have deep bullpens which really benefit them. Can't fault Hendry if he's going w/ the Anaheim model. They've made the playoffs the past 3 out of 4 years. If Colon holds up, the White Sox might not be the champs this year.

Does anybody really doubt that Eyre got this contract because he's coming off a career year, one which was easily his best? He'll be 34 next May, and 36 in May of 2008, when he's making $4M. I see absolutely no reason to believe he'll match his 2005 numbers with the Cubs.

Maybe Eyre will drown Dusty.

We can dream.

I feel like we overpaid for Eyre and that player option on the third year is worse than just getting him for three years with no option (for the cubs, not Eyre). However, he's a quality arm.

Welcome to the team, Scott! :D

Agreed. No use in not welcoming him. If the team plays well enough, he's the kind of guy wo could help us in the playoffs. We can hope anyway.
