Not to call anyone out, but that's not what the Score reported. Murphy was talking hypothetically with Steve Stone about the 40 man roster and said "so if today, the Cubs sign Scott Eyre to a 3 year deal, he'd be put right on the 40-man roster?" This was in relation to the Leiscter trade.

What say you, b_wiggy_66? Do you dispute this account?

One thing about Eyre that is encouraging though (assuming we do sign him now)...his WHIP has gotten better each of the last 4 years, with it being around 1.1 last year, he's proven he can handle being overworked, like Dusty likes to do with his favorite relievers (over 80 appearances each of the last two years, and 70 or more each of the last 4). He has been solid the last two Septembers despite the heavy work load, and his ERA in the second half last year was actually better than the first. We need someone that Dusty can run out there over and over and over and over without wearing out, because if he's any good, that's exactly what Dusty will do. Now that I've taken a good look at him, I hope JH does go out and sign him (for two years, not three).

obviously hendry's bidding against himself.... doubtful anyone offered more than a year. ;)

Nope. Not true. According to a recent quote from Sabean recently, SF offered a multiyear deal to retain him prior to him declaring UFA. But, it could have been only two years.

The Score just had an update and they indeed said that Eyre could sign with the Cubs soon, maybe as early as today.

he may have a lot of appearances but he usually only comes in to face 1 or 2 batters per outing.

Doesnt Will Ohman give you the exact same thing as Eyre? Also does this mean Rusch is definatly starting, because I really cant see us going into the start of the season with 3 lefties out of the pen. I would have thought Hendry would have learned his lesson giving 3 yr deals to relievers but apparently not.

Maybe Ohman is going to be part of the packaging of Patterson, Walker and Hairston in future trades.

Why are we wasting resources, much less a three-year deal on Eyre. Right now, assuming a rotation of Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Maddux and Williams, we have the following candidates for the bullpen:

Dempster

Williamson

Ohman

Wuertz

Rusch

Hill

Mitre

JVB

Koronka

While I don't have a problem adding a reliever, adding a mediocre one at a three year deal borders on insanity.

Don't forget Novoa. You have to believe Hendry is going to package some of these guys in a trade. He really needs to make some room on the 40 man or stand to lose guys in the Rule V.

seriously.

it's a winter tradition -- hendry signs a reliever that will eventually fall apart to a three year deal.

At least he's a real LOOGY.

Yeah, that's my thought too. Eyre has a normal L-R split, so Dusty will use him more or less correctly. I never want to see another reliever with a reverse split on the Cubs while Dusty is here.

I didn't think anything could be more frustrating than last seasons disaster of an offseason, but Jim Hendry is quickly proving me wrong.

If he has another disaster like last year and he and Dusty both recieve extentions as is rumored, then nobody here has a leg to stand on when trying to claim that the Trib wants to win.

I was just about to ask about the splits. It's a relief at least that he has normal splits.

The thing about JH: He makes a lot of little moves that on the surface don't seem too dumb (Rusch, Eyre) but added together they take us right out of the race for any FA we want.

Unless of course, he's decided that Furcal is too expensive, Giles is too old and he's going to try to fill holes thru trade.

Do you go to another board or something and just laugh after reading this board? I really couldn't blame you if you did.

I just dont see the point in getting pretty much an identical guy of Ohman and giving him a 3 year deal worth probably around 10 mil. Why not keep the guy whos making less money and probably has more upside. I just think its a waste of money that could be spent on other areas.

The Trib put all its trust in Andy, and they've given management alll the resources they could use to build a winner. It's the management that has let down Cubs fans, not the ownership.

It's a pretty interesting that's for sure. It's amazing how far everyone's offseason expectations have dropped around here.

Agreed. Though I still say its premature. I am not going to judge this offseason until I see who is maning SS and the three OF postions. Those are the biggest pieces of the puzzle, IMO.

Not saying that you are, or aren't (either way), but what happens when you make drippingly sarcastic comments and actually ARE wrong? Just wondering, because I've had my share that have backfired back in my face. As long as your a person that willingly eats crow, go on with your declaritive statements.

Though we all know what Four Rooms has to say about declaritive statements.
