I don't put much stock in that site, and I'm not that huge on Mench, but if we could get him for Corey I would be all over it.

If the Cubs get Mench, I suppose that means no Giles or Dunn, unless Murton is traded.

I'd be interested to know what the Padres are giving up for Cameron. I don't think they have much to offer. Burroughs is a 3b and the Mets have Wright.

There's a new rumor of Walker going to the Mets for Aaron Heilman. I think I'd take that. Not only does it give us a valuable starter/bp guy it also take the Mets out of the running for Furcal.

I'm definitely a fan of Heilman. I think he could turn out to be a good closer someday.

However, I'm not sure I'd be willing to trade Walker until the SS situation is resolved or they acquire another starting 2B. I'm comfortable with a middle infield of Cedeno/Walker. I'm not comfortable with a middle infield of Cedeno/Perez...or Cedeno/Hairston for that matter.

That would be such an inequitable trade that, if it's on the table, Hendry should make it even pre-Furcal.

Why is Walker for Heilman a rip-off for the Cubs?

no kidding - his source for the cameron trade is "Ryan, a Berkeley student"

come on.

A rip-off FOR the Cubs. Why does he think the Cubs are getting a steal in that deal?

Walker's going to get $2.5 this season and be a free agent after that.

Heilman's going to get $0.35-ish this season and be under club control for many seasons after that.

Eh the Mets have been getting ripped off for years. They're pretty much used to it. Maybe they could throw Mo Vaughn in, and pay his salary.

I don't know. Walker's the cheapest player on the Cubs offense. He's productive and gives the Cubs what they need (OBP/LH bat). The Cubs have a lot of arms comparable to Heilman, who just turned 27 (this weekend actually).

and heilman wants to start and sucks.

This is just the type of trade Hendry would make.

If he really needs to stockpile SP then he has some really big problems on his hands

1. the farmhands suck?????

2. The starting pitchers cannot stay healthy

Back to the Padres. It just occurred to me that they traded Brian Lawrence for Vinny Castilla, while Shawn Burroughs is still on their roster.

Why didn't San Diego sit back and wait patiently for a deal? Like Shawn Burroughs for Mike Lowell. Surely, Lowell would be a better option than Castilla. Padres can afford to take on the money and Florida rids itself of a big contract.

The Padres want to improve pitching, but they have nothing to offer in trade and with Hernandez and Giles leaving for sure, it's a sinking ship that free agent pitchers may look elsewhere. So, they trade a starting pitcher for a 3b instead of trading a cheap 3b. #-o

There was a blurb on ESPN about it being "close" but it didn't say it was final and it didn't say who the Padres were trading.

Buster Olney is reporting that the deal for Cameron is very close. No word on who the Mets are getting, but speculation is at least one reliever.
