ESPN Insider suggests that the Cubs will land both Rafael Furcal and Brian Giles. If the Cubs could somehow land both of those players I personally would be in heaven. Not only would we get a coveted lead-off man, but we would land a left handed productive outfielder in right. I personally wouldn't want to give Giles more than a 3 year deal, but if you have to go to a 4 year to land him do it, and with Furcal if you have to go to 5 do it. Both would fill holes and both would be a tremendous additions to a piss pore obp. lineup. Oh man just dreaming of this gets me excited.

If we get both those guys and Walker starts at 2nd, we've got a contender. I'm not getting my hopes up for Giles though.

But if we land those two guys and have Cedeno at second, we AREN'T a contender?

I think the more realistic placement then would be Perez at second. Dusty will not start two rookies everyday.

I'll be shocked if the Cubs get Giles. This lineup would look nice tho.

Pierre, Furcal, Giles, Lee, Dunn, ARam, Barrett, Nef/Cedeno

I can't see the Cubs landing both Dunn and Giles. That's way too much OBP for Hendry to focus on.

It would be killer to get both Furcal and Giles via free agency, you do that and you can use our trade chips on Dunn...and maybe something crazy like the other Giles for 2B :D

Sign me up. Problem is that Phillips made the prediction.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Steve Phillips the Cubs GM now??

Yes.....

Sadly, considering Phillips made these predictions, which might indicate he thinks it's the course of action that would make the most sense for the Cubs, I'd almost rather him be our GM right now. That is, if he really is thinking along those lines.

two words for you:

Scott Kazmir

Any GM that can get absolutely fleeced like that doesn't deserve the job.

Hendry is a moran, but I'd still rather have him than Phillips (i'm sure you were just kidding about that :D ).

edit: upon further review from the booth, i am wrong. but phillips is still an idiot (dotel, robbie alomar, burnitz, mo vaughn).

I may be wrong but i dont think that Phillips was the one who traded Kazmir, wasnt it his replacement?

true. it was Phillips' assitant that did that after Phillips was canned. maybe i should have said "phillip's regime." he's still a moran though.

Jim Duquette was the GM at the time, but it was widely rumored that the owners son - Jeff Wilpon, made that deal in a last ditch effort to try and make the playoffs two years ago. Duquette was a figurehead in NY his last year as GM before Minaya got there.

hahaha. trade the previously untouchable pitching prospect for a mediocre starter so you can make the playoffs.

why was phillips axed? was it the affair with his secretary or performance related (he deserved it on that alone)?

No, he was fired because he thought Bobby Valentine would look good in those clowns glasses, when he can back to the field after being ejected.

the way i understood it, the mets' pitching coach went to the wilpons and said kazmir had a "fatal flaw" in his mechanics that couldn't be corrected. duquette was then forced by the wilpons to trade him.

Even if that was the case, he could have gotten considerably more than Vic Zambrano in return if he would have just tried. We could have given more than that ourselves.

I read that Peterson wanted Zambrano, because he said that he could fix Zambrano's motion and make him unstoppable. Duquette, or whoever, called the Rays, they asked for Kazmir, and the Mets did the deal.

Has anyone see Kazmir's motion? If he isnt in Dr Andrews office in the next two years, color me shocked.

True, but if the Mets were going to trade him they could have done much, much better.

Oh, Im not disputing that. If I was a Met's fan, I would have hung myself on a ceiling fan.
