wait...walker for 2.5 million at 2B or Neifi at 2.5 million at 2B?

I can't believe this. Hendry is basically saying that Walker = Neifi.

No...he's saying Neifi > Walker since he is going to move Walker.

With the GM meetings underway in CA, could it be possible that Hendry has laid the groundwork for a deal (with Walker being one of the pieces) to land a bat for either CF or RF, which made it necessary (at least in his mind) to sign (overpay) for Neifi? What I am trying to say is that a deal including Walker is all but done, if not I don't how this signing would make any sense.

Good glove guys who can't get on base can be had for a heck of a lot cheaper than this. I doubt there were many people knocking on Neifi's door despite the reports, but my guess this is just another case of Hendry bidding against himself. And I don't even want to think about what kind of trade that would be...

We'll see how long it takes Hendry to say that this contract is a "reward" for how "well" Neifi did last season.

I totally agree that he overpaid. I was just speculating/trying to make the point that another deal is in place already to land a big name outfielder, whether that be a Milton Bradley, Kevin Mench, or someone else.

Honestly, what's the point with all the threads and all our ideas regarding creative trades to improve the team, when we have a drunk for GM that makes moves like giving Neifi F. Perez $5MM?? I mean, we are screwed from the get-go here.

I can't believe how completely awful a GM Hendry has become in the last 12 months. He is Bowden-esque. Get. Him. Out of Here.

Although it's more yrs and $ I would have given. Really this signing isn't about Neifi, it's about Dusty.

Your absolutely right. Hendry has some good things as GM, but hooking his wagon up to Dusty has led him to making some very shortsighted decisions.

There has to be something else coming down the pike for this to make any sense. Maybe he made a deal with Scheurholz not to go after Furcal if they could work a deal to get Marcus Giles. I dunno.... I reaching....Trying real hard to understand this move.

I'm so fricken miserable right now.

I've pretty much always been a Hendry supporter. both because of the good things he did for the organization before last off season and because I thought last off seasons debacle possibly was the result of madates from the higher ups. but the Rusch and Neifi signings say to me that either Hendry is either completely incompetent or that Baker has as much to do with the GM duties on this team as Hendry.

there are two possibilities with this Neifi signing:

A. signed to be a bench player - terrible move. $2.5 M for a backup infielder? he was borderline overpaid last year when he made $1 M to be a backup infielder. neither the Yankees, RedSox, Phillies, Mets or any other big revenue team spends that much on a backup infielder. what gives anybody, particularly the GM, the idea the Cubs should?

B. signed to start - given how absurd A really is, we all better resign ourselves to the fact that Neifi Perez was signed to be a starter. I don't think I need to go into the details of why signing Neifi Perez to be a starter at either short or second is a bad idea.

Sulley - please find us a die hard Cub fan who also happens to be a union or demonstration organizer. if the team continues to be assembled as it appears it is, I propose a boycott and picketing at the Cubs Convention.

Yeah man he's bad. I just can't believe that these moves are actually taking place. What the heck is going on? No other GM would bring back Rusch and Macias. We'll probably be notified next that Hednry will give a 4year deal for 2mil per to Macias to be our super sub.

If that happens, I'm leading the march of pitchforks down Michigan Avenue.

That is exactly right Jon. Hendry seems to pride himself of loyalty. He pays for past performance. That is not a good trait for a GM.

What other decent 2 hole hitter do we have?

Murton

whom JH did trade for. Oh never mind! Sorry, boys! I didn't mean to ruin the pessimist party.

I have some homework for you. How many times did Murton bat second last year? How many times was Macias AND Perez chosen to hit at the top of the order over Murton?

Maybe you shouldn't mock people's anger unless you have evidence to support your theory.

Murton had 10 lead off at bats, and 1 at bat in the 2 hole. He had more at bats in each of the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th spots in the order than 1st or 2nd combined.

Cedeno had 24 at bats in the 2 hole. That's 2 more than Enrique Wilson got. Remember Enrique Wilson? Cedeno got sent down when the Cubs picked up Wilson.

Macias hit in the 1/2 spot 48 times. That's more than Cedeno and Murton combined. That's NOT Neifi Perez. That's MACIAS. I'm not even going to bother with Perez, because he hit at the top of the order a ridiculous amount of times.

What about history tells you Murton will bat 2nd for the 2006 Cubs? I'm dying to know.

Walker should hire Neifi's agent.

We've got a "players' GM" and a "players' manager," but apparently only for certain players. Some good that has done.

The more I let this sink in, the angrier and angrier I am getting. What kind of moron pays $5MM for the worst hitter in the big leagues? What chaps my hide is that you know darn well, when it comes down to bidding for GOOD players that make a difference, Hendry will let himself get outbid by a few million dollars and say "Well, X got too expensive, couldn't afford him."

YOU COULDN'T AFFORD HIM BECAUSE YOU WASTED $5.5MM/YEAR ON GLENDON RUSCH AND NEIFI PEREZ, YOU TOTAL INCOMPETENT BUFFOON!!!

Let's see here: you have $12MM to spend let's say, just for the sake of argument. On the one hand, you spend all that money on Brian Giles. On the other hand, you spend it on Glendon Rusch, Neifi Perez, and Juan Encarnacion (or Jacques Jones, or Jeromy Burnitz, or a similar stiff). Gee, I wonder which team will do better over the course of a season?

Honestly, Hendry and Baker can't leave town fast enough for me. I am so so frustrated with this organization. Why can't we ever achieve excellence?

Walker can help find a long-term solution for another position. Am guesing that Hendry views Cedeno as the long term solution for 2b.

Walker has the worse agent in baseball.

Well...Maxwell Smart died so he can get a new one now.

Well, some good has come of this. I've never seen Jon so upset before. :P

Seriously though, the only way you can ensure Neifi being a backup is by not starting Cedeno, which makes Neifi redundant unless you trade Cedeno. There's no logic to having Neifi on the team with Dusty around.
