Steve Stone was just on with Boers and Bernstein on the Score. Paraphrasing what he said:

The thing he would be concerned with about Giles is the decline in power, even given the home park he played in, he played 81 games on the road and still only hit 17(?) HRs.

With Furcal you get a proven leadoff hitter, something the Cubs sorely need, you get a proven shortstop, and a switch hitter.

He was also unsure whether Murton could be an everyday LF, and was uncertain of his power.

Thinks the Cubs may end up with Furcal and Damon.

So that (very) roughly translates into 34 homeruns in a full season away from PETCO. What's the problem?

He had 17 HR total, only 9 on the road.

I think he means he only hit 17 total HR's, even with 81 games on the road.

Yes, because what the Cubs are desperately short on is guys with good slugging percentages.

Stone gets dumber and dumber every day.

If Giles hit "only" 20-25 homers or so as a Cub next season and kept up his OBP production I would be very much fine with that.

i think the key you have to question is not if but when is giles going to regress. He's 35 years old and wants a what? 3-4 year deal?

whats the story in Giles shoulder? I thought I'd heard that was robbing him of some of his power also.

Furcal and Damon? I'd rather have Nomar and the Giles brothers. Nomar and Manny for a pipe dream.

I'm surprised Terry or Dan didn't ask Stone, "why can't the Cubs get Furcal and Giles?"

I think the real question is how bad will he regress. He can still regress this year and be very very helpful to the Cubs.

Look at the other parks in that division. San Fran, LA and Arizona. Arizona is a good place to hit when the lid is off. When it is not, it's not all that nice. Other than Colorado, it's not exactly a hitter's haven division.

This is a valid question. Another (related) question is how much is he going to regress?

My estimate: not that much. The guy's generally in great shape, for one thing (he's built like a tank), and more importantly, much of his effectiveness comes from his plate discipline (and I'm not just talking about walks, here; being patient enough to wait for the right pitch to hit can help lead to more hits, and more XBH). His bat speed and reaction times may decline, and his joints may stiffen up on him, but he's not likely to lose his plate discipline. I think he's still got 3-4 productive years left in him - and for the first two, he may not see any regression at all.

Dan thought that the Sox should pick up Burnitz to DH or for a bench bat based off his performance at the beginning of the year, thinking they could milk a full season out of him if he was part time. Stoney didn't think that would work because of Burnitz's long swing and having never been a part time guy.

I'm guessing the thought process is that we wouldn't get Furcal, Giles and Damon, and the assumption was that we would get Damon. This wasn't said, but Damon's name was glossed over so quick it was like it was assumed.

The Score hosts don't really confront Stone on anything.

Yet more evidence that Stone shouldn't be a GM.

I agree - I've always thought he was one of the most overrated minds in baseball.

My impression is that he's very good at dissecting in game situations, but terrible when it comes to evaluating players and teams as a whole.

Yeah, he doesn't do a good job adaping to new methods of evaluating the players. He's far too married to old school methodology.

Those are fair points. His in-game instinct are astounding at times. His talent evaluation may be less so.
