But he's just not cut out to be a starter.

John Koronka, Cubs: The Cubs reliever has now made nine appearances spanning 10 innings and has yet to give up a run. He's got 10 strikeouts and the league is hitting .176 against the lefty.

If he continues to dominate like this, I wouldn't mind having him in the bullpen next year.

UTIL Brendan Harris, Nationals: Playing short, third and second, Harris' best position this fall has been batter's box. The infielder leads the league with a ridiculous .453 average, having gone 24-for-53 in 14 games.

I hated seeing Harris go, but at least he helped us get Murton.

That's true. It'd be easy to cry over Harris being exchanged for Nomar . . . but, as it has turned out, Murton has been the "centerpiece" of that deal.

Murton was no slouch when we got him, though. I was quite excited about him coming here as well.

Although I don't think anything short of my first child being born will top the joy I felt when we traded for Nomar.

the other lefty spot is open so why not? i like the idea myself. now if only the cubs would give jvb a chance in the pen.

I think there are a number of options ahead of JVB in line for bullpen jobs.

other than novoa and possibly williams (who should be starting next year and not in the pen imo), i dont see who would be ahead of him. i dont really knwo why the cubs dont like him much as he as done nothing but excel since the cubs converted him to relief last year.

Assuming a six man bullpen, Dempster, Ohman, Wuertz, Novoa, and Williamson all pencil ahead of JVB. When you also factor in either Rusch or Williams (whichever isn't the fifth starter), the only hope JVB has is the Cubs have the ridiculous notion that they need a seven man pen again.

assuming rusch is the #5, i see a pen of ohman, 2nd lefty (jk?), wuertz, williamson & dempster leaving 1 spot open. i really dont see williams as very effective as a reliever (maybe a miracle will occur & maddux will retire-i can dream cant i) so that leaves it between jvb & novoa. i would assume 1 of them will be used in a trade and i am rooting for jvb to stick.

While Novoa has had his moments, his stuff is much better than JVB. Both seem to have control issues, but I can't fathom anyway that the Cubs choose JVB over Novoa. This also assumes that the Cubs don't sign another reliever to improve the pen which I find likely that they will.

You can root all you want, but I think it is not only probable, but very likely that JVB doesn't figure much into the plans of the 2006 Cubs.

if you look at his minor leauge #'s, jvb doesnt have control issues. when dusty leaves him on the bench for 2 weeks between appearences its a different story. i just dont see how the cubs can overlook a guy with such spectacular #'s in the minors the past 2 years. i wouldn't be suprised if jvb goes to another team and excels.

If Maddux decides to retire, I hope he does it within the next week, or not at all. Worst thing that could happen is he makes up his mind in January or February, when all of the FAs are off of the table, and most teams that are looking to trade pitching have already done so.

I actually like that pen quite a bit.

A for JVB, you never know, Williamson could re-break something and that would force Dusty's hand, especially if JVB is tearing up the minors.

Honestly though, I'm not sure I trust JVB yet. Every time I've seen him pitch he's been really wild and can't find the plate at all.

Fox's career is probably over. He was only signed for 1 year.

Yeah. I don't think his arm will be able to handle another surgery.

Wasn't it mentioned during one of his starts last season (in LA perhaps?) that his father couldn't make the trip because he was ill? I seem to remember something like that. Hopefully, it isn't anything serious but that might be why.

that could be it. hopefully he'll have a good shot at making the bullpen next year to go along with ohman.
