I would love to have Young, but I really don't think it'll happen. They have no reason to get rid of a guy like that. The Abreu/Blalock/Patterson and prospects deal sounds intriguing, though, if it's even a remote possibility.

Anyone have any idea why the Rangers would have soured on Blalock? That just seems stupid.

Hank hit a Patterson-esque .231/.276/.335/.611 away from Ameriquest this year. Patterson, Nolasco and Williams for Abreu would be good. Patterson and Nolasco to Texas, Blalock and Williams to Philly.

His numbers have been dropping off a little the past two seasons. His strikeouts are up a bit, and this year, his walk rate was down. He's still very young though and a decent third baseman. I wouldn't give up on him yet though.

Soriano would be a great way to get worse defensively too!

Isn't Young abysmal on defense, too?

As a SS yes, I thought he was avg. defensively as a 2B, although I haven't seen the stats.

Is he really that bad? I know his fielding percentage at SS is around league average, but I honestly know nothing about what kind of range he has.

As far as range, not as bad as putting a china cabinet out there, but it could be close.

wow, i didn't realize this.

86 Rate2 this year, -20 RAA.

that's pretty bad.

I think for the Rangers to even consider this the prospect would need to be more at the Pinto level than Nolasco. Nolasco had a nice year and all but still I think from a "stuff" comparison Pinto is probably more valued by other GM's. Maybe something along the lines of CPatt, Williams, Pinto and possibly throwing in Wellemeyer to the Rangers or Phillies would make it more likely.

Why would the Rangers be giving up on Blalock? Do they have a prospect at 3B that's close to ML ready?

They've got this Mark Teixeira kid that might turn into a decent hitter. :D

Then they could trade for Delgado and be monstrous on the IF.

Teixiera, eh? Never heard of him. :P

Seriously, though, if they wanted to trade for Delgado wouldn't they use Blalock for those purposes, rather than deal him for some relatively unproven pitchers from us and then have to deal more players for Delgado?

It depends on the approach they want to take. If I were GM and my my goal was to compete with Anaheim and Oakland in 2006, I'd look to:

1. Deal Soriano for pitching, move Young back to 2B

2. Sign Furcal to play SS and be a huge upgrade to the defense

3. Sign a free agent innings-eater that has a demonstrated ability to keep the ball in the park

I'd personally try to hold on to the young pitching they have in Diamond, Volquez and the other one.

Hey, shoot me. I'm too lazy to look up the third best pitcher in an AL team's system. :D

Couple of things:

1. Anybody who thinks Michael Young isn't a good defensive shortstop hasn't seen him play. Yes he might be better at second but he's a very good shortstop.

2. Why would the Rangers want a third team involved in a Blaylock for Abreau deal?

I agree here. The Rangers could just use Abreu in RF themselves.

We can seriously get nothing more than a bag of penauts for Corey anyways so even if he does get traded, don't even expect a decent minor-leaguer.

I think we could get something of value, Patterson still has as much talent as anyone in baseball. He also has speed, and power, and youth.

He could make as much as 3m this coming year. Please name a team that would be willing to pay 3m for a guy who hit .215 AVG last year and has a career OBP of .293.

If you find a team willing to pay him 3m to play for them, now tell me what you think they would be willing to give up to get him?

IMO, you give him away and get peanuts in return, or you keep him and hope he starts living up to his potential. Giving him away right now is giving up another guy when his value is at an all time low. Bad idea.

If we can upgrade RF and resign Nomar(and have Cedeno on the bench, not Perez) I would be OK with having Corey in the 8th or 9th hole.

i suggested this in another thread: wood, cp & walker to texas for young. cedeno could then start at ss & young at second. i seem to remember hearing that the rangers owner coveted wood since he is from texas.

Wood has a no trade clause.

Wow! Not a chance. Trading TWO guys who's values are at their lowest along with another guy who is very productive given his salary.

With all of these suggestions for Cedeno to be penciled in as a starter, does anyone have any projections for him for a full season? What if he has an offensive season that looks like Patterson's past season? Can the Cubs win with that kind of everyday production? Who is his back up if that's the best he can do?

Because we don't know whether he can be a plus production guy or a minus production guy, I don't think it's a good idea to pencil him in as a starter on a team that is in desperate need to improve offensively.

I believe the best course of action is to resign Nomar have Cedeno on the bench and trade for MGiles or LCastillo for 2B, and hopefully sign BGiles for OF.
