Would anyone trade Kerry Wood to the Mets for Millege and maybe Cameron (I know, assuming Woody would approve the deal)? They traded Kazmir for Vic Zambrano. Wood's way more valuable than Zambrano was, I bet we could get Millege and then some out of him. I only throw Cameron out there as someone who could keep CF warm for a year for Pie, not that I particularly want him.

If not Wood, then who might they give Millege up for that we'd be willing to trade?

Thoughts?

It was a different GM that made that awful move. And Milledge is basically the same player as Pie and I'm not all that enamored with either of them so I don't see why you would trade Wood for him.

Why would Kerry accept a trade to the Mets?

OK, let's see - we're going to trade a guy who, when healthy, has maybe the best stuff in the National League.

And we're going to do this just as he's entering the part of his career when he ought to become more of a pitcher and not just a thrower.

And while he's recovering from shoulder surgery, so his trade value will be the lowest it's ever been.

Ostensibly to save money to spend on a free agent class that's the worst in years.

Just one question - why?

do you not even read what has been said hundreds of times about this?

wood's wife is from chicago. he said, when he got the contract, he wanted the ntc so he could stay there. why would he waive it to go to the mets? you'd find it hard to get him to waive it to go back home to texas, i think - the mets are out of the question.

I honestly think Wood is here next year and that there is no attempt to resign him. But who knows. He could have a career year in his contract year, like many do, than we can let him go.

I also asked who else we might have to offer for him that the Mets would be interested in too.

Does Wood actually expect to be playing for the Cubs after next season anyway? The only way he comes back is if he has a really awesome season and is willing to take a big discount. Unless he plans on signing with the White Sox, I don't see him playing in Chicago. So the NTC is kind of a moot point. It's like "should I move this offseason or next offseason?" Also, I think the D'Backs can put together a better package than the Mets, and I think he'd rather play there.

I believe that the Cubs have a club option for 2007 and unless he has an awful season or another major injury I can't see them not exercising the option. No way they let a guy that talented walk.

The option is for 13.5 million with a 3 mil buyout. He would have to have one heck of a year to justify $13.5 million. Unless he's changed his mechanics, he'll probably be back on the DL and it won't be too hard of a decision.

Just to put this into perspective, San Francisco exercised Jason Schmidt's 10.5 million option for next season. That's how much teams value talent over performance (his ERA was 4.40, WHIP 1.42 this last year).

Players always say stuff like that. "This is my home, now. I never want to leave it." And guess what? Two years later, they're gone. Half the time, they're not being honest when they say it anyway. It's a more of a PR thing. "This is my dream job," etc.

Wood is no different. He said it at the time. That doesn't mean:

a. he can't change his mind.

b. he really meant it in the first place.

The decision will be whether he's worth $10.5 million.

No, it'll be for 13.5 million. They will either pay him 13.5, or 3 million to buy out the contract.

3 million is sunk. it's 10.5 or 0.

That depends on what year you think the buyout is put towards.

It doesn't matter to what year the $3 million buyout is allocated. The decision that will have to be made is whether it's worth spending an additional 10.5 million for an additional year of Kerry Wood's services.

If you think the buyout is allocated towards '06, then Wood either counts 13.5 million, or nothing towards the '07 payroll. I'm pretty sure that's the decision Warpticon was referring to.
