If a good pitcher can pitch to any pitcher, then why do so many of the greatest pitchers prefer better Defensive Catchers, such as Maddux, Johnson ETC ETC

False statement.

First move the Cubs need to do is trade Barrett the flake, to an AL team where he can DH and sign Hernandez.,,,

To those of you who love the Barrett and think he's so gd great and think the Cubs could do better elsewhere are missing the point: The Cubs need to make MANY decisions and why just address some? Why half ass it, especially since Hernandez is available NOW, not next year and that would include trading Barrett. If you disagree, I don't know what to tell you other than watch more of the games if you think Barrett is so great.

Before I reply to anymore of the flamers on this subject, answer me this:

WHo would you rather have over the next 3-4 years....Barrett or Hernandez????????????

So I guess SANDY MARTINEZ is a great catcher, since Wood k'd 20 with him catching?

I would rather have Barrett, because I think you'd have to spend more to get Hernandez when there are more pressing needs.

DOn't be an idiot about Martinez. That was terrible.

Hernandez wouldn't be much more than Barrett and who cares if he is?? Catcher is an important position with a team who seemingly is building the team around the starting rotatio, don't you agree??

Hernandez had more errors than Barrett did this past season. Now even without that, they are very similar players offensively, with the edge going to Barrett slightly, better isolated patience and power. Hernandez made over 4mil last year. I am willing to bet that if he is as good as you say he is, he'll probably get a contract like A-Rods. Somewhere in the 18 mil range? I mean he might be an upgrade defensively and he might have had better luck with his staff, but do you really think this is a problem worth addressing this offseason? We had two pitchers, Prior and Z, post excellent ERAs. Overall, our pitchers weren't that bad.

The problem with the team is its inability to consistently get men on base and score them. Whether you subscribe to the station-to-station style of play or the "smallball" idea, you still need people who can get on base. The Cubs were terrible at that last year, and it should be their primary focus. If they could get Ramon Hernandez at the same price as Barrett, would it be a good idea? Sure. But that should be pretty far down the wishlist.

I personally am indifferent about it. I would take either of them.

Then you haven't seen Hernandez play much then. I live in So Cal and saw him a lot and he's got THE ENTIRE PACKAGE and hands down is a better option than Barrett at the position. Hernandez is a REAL Catcher and Barrett is a freak experiment gone wrong and appearently most Cub fans haven't realized that.

Wow, you think Hernandez is a good defensive catcher?

I love humor. Barrett "a freak experiment gone wrong"...excellent.

If you want a complete package, All-Star, superman at every position, then be a Yankees fan.

Probably because there is a level of comfort, albeit minimal. If you think Maddux wouldn't have had a Hall of Fame career pitching to guys like Barrett his entire career, then you are giving pitchers way too little credit and catchers way too much. One of the other reasons Maddux typically likes pitching to the backup catcher is that Maddux can spend at least three of his days between starts sitting next to the backup catcher on the bench during games and discussing things. Having that time certainly doesn't hurt.

And the fact that you can't see one side of the story doesn't make it false.

That's not even close to the first move they should be making UNLESS, the return for Barrett solves at least one much more important problem.

I really like how people who don't agree with you are dubbed "flamers." Perhaps if you actually read through some of the responses to your posts, you would realize that no one on here is claiming that Barrett is the end all be all to catching. I'm sure a lot of people would probably prefer Hernandez, but that decision can't be made without answering some other questions. What impact would adding Hernandez have on the Cubs ability to take care of more pressing needs (in other words, how much more/less would they be spending on their starting catcher)? What would/could the Cubs get in return for Barrett in a trade?

cERA is an overrated stat. I've been critical of Barrett's game calling this past season, but he has gotten better at it, and is still a very young catcher.

CERA is a much over rated stat.

Offensively, Barrett was the best catcher in the NL. I think I'd rather stick with Barrett, thank-you.

If having this opinion makes me a "flamer," bring on the gas can. I can handle it, I've already been asked to die once this week. What's one more?

I thought Rothschild called the pitches (except for Maddux).
