I'm curious to hear what Astros fans are thinking about Lidge right now. My first thought is: Lidge = BH Kim.

Is he done in Houston? Is he permanently labeled a choker? Or does the common Houston fan view this offseason as an aberration of things to come?

It's funny that in 2003 they had Lidge, Dotel, Wagner for 7th, 8th, 9th. Then they traded Wagner, and made Dotel the closer. Then Dotel stunk and Lidge became the man. Now Lidge has stunk in the WS (despite a mostly fine regular season). Maybe Qualls or Gallow can close?

What Astros fans saying period? ESPN radio today was all about Cubs/Sox; you'd think the Astros weren't even involved.

Mostly fine? He was freaking excellent.

K/9 in excess of 13

K/BB in excess of 4

OPS against around 600

WHIP of 1.15

44/48 in s/opp

my perception was that lidge's failures stemmed from overuse. I haven't looked it up but it seemed lidge pitched every single game, mostly in situations where he isn't normally used.

I was listening to ESPN radio the other day and they were asking Jeff Brantley about Lidge. (And yeah, I know Brantley is mainly an idiot, but when it comes to closers, he may know something.)

Anyway, he said that Lidge could have been a victim of his own stuff. When he's on, both his slider and fastball are so unhittable that he doesn't usually have to worry about locating and gets into a pattern. But if his fastball normally at 95-97 comes in at 92 in the wrong spot, he can be hit. One mistake by him, and it's a ballgame when there's only one run at stake. His mistakes just came at the wrong time.

Brantley said it and I'll agree with him...there's nothing wrong with Lidge.

Of course, I still believe the term for someone like him is "gutless, choking dog."

Actually that term only applies to Kyle Farnsworth, who is, in fact, a gutless choking dog.

For the record I'm not the one who keeps bringing it up.

For the record you ARE the only one bringing up Farnsworth.

Vance merely labeled Lidge a gutless choking dog. Which, by the criteria put forward, applies to Lidge this post-season.

And, as I pointed out, it only applies to Farnsworth. To apply it to anyone else is ridiculous.

No more ridiculous than your application.

Oh come on, Lidge has been a highly reliable closer until Game 5 of the NLCS. He gave up a home run to Albert Pujols in a (omg!) clutch situation. Yeah he's Farnsworth 2 Electric Boogaloo, of course

He started to lose it in game 4 of the NLCS. Then blew game 5. Then blew game 2 of the WS, then blew game 4 of the WS.

I'd gladly take him for the Cubs.

Not if he's developed a taste for choking in big games! He has been a fine regular season closer but his pedigree has hardly been established in the postseason when closing games is critical.

So? Mariano Rivera wasn't so hot last October. Or October '01. Lidge is still an elite closer, but if the Astros fans demand that the team remove him, well, come on over.
