NY Post has a registered site, so I'll just paraphrase what I read. Goony, being in NY, can tell us if George King and Joel Sherman are reporter-types, who make inferences based on facts, or gossip-monger-types, who like to throw stuff around and see what sticks.

(1) Yankees aren't really interested in getting involved in a long term deal with Johnny Damon due to age, health and arm questions, so they are looking to fill CF via the trade market, and are focused on Mike Cameron, Torii Hunter and Milton Bradley, who will all be shopped this offseason.

(2) A's may be willing to trade Barry Zito, but they want an affordable, durable starter in return, who doesn't give up the long ball and focuses on throwing strikes. The Mets are rumoured to be interested with Aaron Heilman as the bait.

I certainly would be pleased if Milton Bradley and Barry Zito were wearing Cub uniforms in 2006.

Would Jerome Williams be a pitcher who would interest the A's in a deal for Zito?

Hoops, any more word on whether that three-way with the Cubs, Marlins, and Dodgers with the Cubs getting Castillo, Bradley and Lowe has any legitimacy?

Posted
Something about Zito bothers me Hoops. I would like to see Bradley and hopefully the Cubs can buy low with him but if the Yanks are involved I'm curious on how many other teams might be too.

I would rather keep Williams and make a trade for an impact bat.

Vance,

I followed up day before yesteday, and nothing new about it in terms of the specific trade components. However, in approaching it a different way, the source made it pretty clear that his contacts in Florida are telling him that if Delgado is kept, Lowell and Castillo or LoDuca won't, and that after selecting their manager, first priority for LA is to get rid of Bradley.

Bradley, please.

Yanks don't have much to offer for Bradley.

Maybe not but more teams may be after Bradley then we know. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cards get him and Giles (if he is a free agent).

I know how much money the Cubs have to throw around this offseason, but how much do the Cards have? I dread Giles going to Busch too, but do their resources allow it?

They found a way to get Sanders and Mulder last year. I just don't underestimate what they are capable of doing. Their GM seems to be pretty creative and gets the job done IMO.

I also hope the Cubs don't spend money just because they have money. I want them to spend it on quality and not the Burnitz types.

Getting Bradley would be fantastic. Until his first tantrum, of course.

He profiles as a viable option in both CF and RF. I don't know if he'd go into Operation Shutdown if he weren't played in CF. I hope not.

Assuming he wouldn't melt down at playing RF, having him in the fold would give Hendry flexibility in pursuing either a RF or a CF - based on what opportunities came along.

Why not just keep Williams as our #5 and look to trade minorleaguers for OF help.

I'd trade Hill before others figure out he has only one ML quality pitch, even as good as it is. With his major problem being HR allowed, perhaps he would be better suited to Dodger Stadium.

The approx. estimate is $22 mil, but no one knows for sure until the new payroll is confirmed.

BTW, thanks for the info guys. Since I'm not making any moves, I don't consider this espionage.

If they trade ARod, they'll likely get a plethora of players back in return. They could be bigger players in the trade market as opposed to the FA market than they typically have been in the past.

He has a low 90's fastball to go with that curve. I'm not opposed to trading Hill, but he wouldn't be the first chip I'd offer up.

How do you figure he has a major problem with HR allowed? I can't find what he did in the minors this year, but he never had more than 9 in a season coming into 2005. Coming into 2005, he'd given up 14 in over 200 innings of work. He gave up 3 as a Cub this year. Too small of a sampling to get any kind of a read on him.

Could Williams and Murton get the Cubs Zito and another player? Zito would basically give the Cubs a #2 starter, who is durable (BIG PLUS) and can eat some innings.

and the offense would be left with what exactly?

Isn't durable and innings eater the same thing?

From what I can see, Hill gave up 23 HR this year.

I've always thought his two problems were control and HR allowed.

A very straight and hittable low 90's fastball. And I wouldn't throw him away, but I wouldn't hesitate for a nanosecond to trade him for any significant offensive help.

I know it may seem crazy, but I don't trade Williams and Murton for Zito.
