In my opinion, Boston has an excellent good potential to be a VERY active team this offseason.

There is a very real possibility that Grafanino, Millar, Mueller, Ramirez and Damon won't be with the team in 2006 - there's also a good possibility that Arroyo or Clement is moved as well.

I think it's all going to hinge on what happens with Manny - so many of their "next" moves hinge on what they do with Manny. They can't afford to sit around and wait to make a deal with him because moving him frees up alot of cash they can use to try to sign free agents and/or make other moves.

I would really like to see the Cubs make some phone calls to Theo Epstein (assuming he's still the GM in a couple weeks). I have to believe something can be worked out to benefit both teams! Boston has a few potentially excellent starting arms down in the minors - it would take a good deal to get one of them, but perhaps if we "took Manny and his contract off their hands," they may give up one of those arms if we send them something reasonable in return.

Should be a good offseason regardless.

hopefully epstein screws around all winter, trades manny really late, and blows his entire offseason.

If Manny is traded, I think he'll go to the Mets. My guess is Epstein will try to force a quick decision from Damon. If Damon stays put, there's not as much need for a CF as there is if Damon leaves. If Epstein decides that Damon is not a part of the plan, he may try to make a quick deal with the Mets for Mike Cameron. Cameron fills the void in CF and then he can deal Manny and sign Giles, or deal Manny and acquire another big outfielder in a trade.

If I'm Epstein, I'd keep Damon, deal Manny for as much young talent as I can, and then send tons of that talent to the Reds for Adam Dunn.

Vance - I would try to do the exact same thing - Dunn is one of the few players out there that can provide protection for Ortiz and make the fans quickly forget Manny. It would be a VERY good move if it could be pulled off.

What would everyone think about trading to get Clement back? I'd like him back. He wasn't the same after taking that shot to the head, but I think an offseason and being reunited with Rothschild could get him back to his old form. I think he's a prime candidate to have a career year next season.

Pass. If Maddux's option hadn't vested, I'd have considered it, but I'd rather sign Milwood for a similar price (dollar-wise) and probably better production.

Also, even if you don't want to sign a FA pitcher, Williams could likely produce at Clement's level next season at a fraction of the cost.

Personally I like the guy, but 2005 was just the same ol' same ol' for Matt Clement, and I don't think it's worth trading any talent to get him back. I expected him to put together a career year in Boston since he actually had a good offense behind him, but his continued struggles with his control kills him every time.

The media and fans in Boston are saying the exact same things about Matt Clement as we Cub fans were while he was with us... "The guy has great stuff, but he can't seem to harness it often enough to become a consistent #2 or even a #3 type starter for a full season."

FYI, on SoSH Corey's name has been bandied about as a possible CF trade target...

Patterson for Hanley Ramirez.

pfft! No chance.

Patterson for Manny, straight up. :D

You put the smiley on there, but it could happen. Boston tried to give Manny away last year...they put him on unrevocable waivers to any team that picked up his entire salary. We could get Manny for CPat if we picked up enough, if not all, of Manny's salary.

Maybe if we did Pie for Manny, and picked up ALL of his salary, Boston would consider it.

I can see Boston inquiring about Patterson, but we'd geting not much in value back.

Patterson is moved for cents on the dollar this winter. Bank on it. Think bulk bullpen arm or low level prospect.

Boston would love to rid itself of Manny's contract so they can spend it elsewhere this offseason. Imho it won't take much more than a team willing to pick up the whole $ amount and give up a player or two - I'll bet the Mets could get him for Cameron straight up if they take on his whole contract.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I think Boston wants that money to play with asap and I honestly think they've had their fill of Manny.

From what I have read, Millwood is lock to re-sign in Cleveland. He like it there, loves the team's youth and future, and knows he will be on a contender for the length of the contract.

It wasn't the shot to the head that hurt his season. Clement was stinking up the joint throughout July, with or without the beaning (8.88 ERA). Matt just isn't a very good pitcher. He walks way too many batters and is overpaid. It might work out for him in Boston, where they can put up with his frequent blowup starts with an offense that mashes. But with the shaky lineup the Cubs continue to employ, you just can't have a guy who all too often gets rocked early.

I do not want Clement back. Not because I dislike him, quite the opposite. He just isn't the right fit now.

But, I'd contest the not a good pitcher claim. I think he is one of those guys who will "find it" for a season or two and put together Cy Young Award worthy numbers during the stretch. I know he is 31, which is old for that type of thing to happen usually, but it's just a feeling I have.

Regardless, he isn't right for Chicago.

i don't want clement back, and i don't think he'll ever have a great season. he's a pitcher that benefits from his own wildness. his pitches move so much that he often doesn't know where they're going and all you have to do is put pressure on him to throw a straight fastball. he has great stuff, too good for his own good.

he'll have great games, and he's a good pitcher, but he's overpaid and not worth bringing back.

Note, I did not say he wasn't good. I said he wasn't very good. He's talented as heck, with wicked stuff. But he just cannot harness that stuff over the course of a season, which is why he can look like a Cy candidate for a month and be no better than a 6th starter the next month. A team that scores a lot of runs can use a guy like Clement.

Hmm...Boston is looking for a 2B. Does anyone thnk they'd want Todd Walker back?

What could we get from Boston for Walker? Shoppach?
