"The Red Sox signaled they could be a suitor if right fielder Brian Giles enters free agency next month. Persons close to Giles expect to hear from the Cardinals, who might lose right fielder Larry Walker to retirement. The A's pursued Giles when he was in Pittsburgh and employ one of Giles' closest friends, catcher Jason Kendall."

How about trading Barrett for Kendall? Then trade a whole bunch of people to Atlanta for Marcus Giles. Does Brian have any other friends we should know about? Any pitchers he can't hit and would prefer to be teammates with?

Let's make it impossible to tell the Cubs no. :P

What worries me the most isn't that the Cubs couldn't compete for his services. I'm worried the Cubs won't make Giles a target. We hear the Cubs in all the rumors for Furcal, but never in the Giles rumors.

I would just love to hear one report saying that the Cubs have interest.

Me too, Vance. I see Furcal and that will be it for big signings. Granted, the FA class is thin but I would like to see at least a mention of the Cubs regarding Giles. Maybe a trade is in the future......

Maybe Hendry has a younger (possibly better) guy on his radar in a trade..... hopefully

would be nice if he could pull off another Choi for Lee.

Patterson for Burrell?

Patterson for Hunter?

How many tools does Giles have? You need plenty of tools for the Cubs to be interested.

Patterson would be the third player in any of those trades. His trade value is about as low as it could get without him getting in a shootout with NYC Cops because he was dealing crack from the head of the Statue of Liberty.

And if we want one of our beat guys to print it, why don't we just ask Bruce Miles to toss the name into an article?

Something like "Many Cub fans have their eyes on Brian Giles", or something like that.

I still think that Giles has Jim Thome written all over him. Might be worth the money next year but look out into the future. Also since only one team has gone from under 500 signed a bunch of free agents and went on the win the WS, signing anyone age 33 or older just doesnt seem like a good idea.

Though I would much rather throw money away on a couple of bad years from an old Giles than give one dollar to Preston Wilson. At least Giles has been a great player.

I doubt we'll hear something along those lines whether Hendry does or doesn't have interest. If he's been consistant about anything during his tenure, it is that he holds his cards close to his chest. The Nomar Deal wasn't on most people's radar until the final hours, and no one knew about Lee very far ahead either.

Honestly, I'd be more discouraged if we were hearing alot about either of the Giles brothers.

We don't need a bunch of free agents. Just two.

As long as one is Giles.

Just thought I'd point out that we were all over the Nomar trade for the entire month of July in 04. There were reports coming out as early as early July. Maybe the mainstream media was in denial about Boston trading Nomar, but I think we were generally all over it.. (although plenty doubted its likelihood)..

I think the same could be said about Hendry working out a Sosa trade with the Mets and the subsequent Burnitz signing...That was being talked about for a while before.

I just think it's a little bit of a misconception that Hendry is any more "sneaky" or secretive than any other GM out there... And in the Lee deal, which did seem to come out of nowhere, Jim has said more than a few times that it fell into his lap, and I wouldn't doubt it.

He's no Jerry Krause..

According to this column, the Yankees may have interest in Giles too - as well as Hunter, Cameron, Lofton and Jacque Jones. The columnist believes they have little to no interest in Damon.

The Hartford Courant downplays Damon a bit too.

"Johnny Damon may be irresistible to the Yankees if he gets out on the free agent market, but the Yankees will have to consider whether his physical problems are the start of a decline and whether they can live with his weak throwing arm in Yankee Stadium."

I would love to see Giles next year but I do worry about his contract length. Particularly if he has a lot of suitors.

At this point, back up the truck. The Cubs placed themselves in this position following a terrible approach to 2005. If they have to overpay, its nobody's fault but their own.

Unless they plan on not resigning Matsui or trading Sheffield, where would they put Giles?

Ha ha. They lived with Bernie Williams for 15 years, and suddenly the throwing arm becomes a consideration.

I'm not a Yankee devotee, but I thought Bernie used to be a very good fielder with a good arm. It was my understanding that an elbow injury has hampered him in recent years. Am I off base?

That's pretty accurate. Bernie never had a gun, but he used to have great range and an adaquate arm. They actually wanted to get rid of him years ago, but the whole "true yankee" thing got in the way, and they stuck with him through loyalty. And in my opinion, paid dearly for it. His range and arm disappeared as his body broke down the past couple years.

Bernie at his peak absolutely blew away Damon at his peak, and for an extended time. 8 straight years of .390+ OBP (4 were .400+), 6 straight years of .500+ SLG. Damon has never once been at .390 or .500. While he was a better base stealer, in recent years his numbers have decline, and they will probably stay down as he ages. Damon has also failed to play 150 games in 2 of the past 3 years. He's not a physical wreck, but he's shown signs of breaking apart a bit. The hollywood caveman thing scares me.
